If I set up a software mirrored volume in windows XP with 2 drives and the first dies on me, will I be able to just take out the bad one and run off the second one or will I need to add a new drive to rebuild the mirror first? Also, do I need 2 drives of the same size or can I partition a larger drive and use one of the partitions to build the mirror?

Question 1: No you won't need to rebuild the array to boot off the second drive. Simple way is to jumper the good drive to master and boot. Or if your BIOS supports it, set your PC to boot off of that drive.

Question 2: You can technically partition a larger drive and mirror to that, but it's a good idea IMO to use two drives that are the same make/model. It's gives me the willies to use different drives in a RAID setup. Although I sure others may have a different opinion.
