the black square acts as a thermal compound to help transfer heat off the cpu better, so don't take it off
read the instructions that came with your cpu if you want a better explanation about it

Do you mean the 4 sponge cushions on the CPU? I have 4 on my AMD proc. which I believe acts as cushioning for the Heatsink.. unless you want to risk crushing it.

If you're referring to the sponge/cushion ont he back plate of the 947, then no also. AFAIK, you are not suppose to take anything off from the heatsink. you'll enjoy it, I know i am.
