liteon DVD-RW811 crashing computer

i have a liteon dvd writer (liteon 811) which im using in an external USB2.0 drive bay
it works great aside from the fact that windows 2000 seems to randomly "forget" that the drive is there. the drive letter will dissapear from "My Computer" and if i open the drive tray the machine instaly reboots.

im totaly stumped ive got no idea why it dissapears and no idea how to fix it

help
 
intermittent connection?

tried a different cable, reloaded the USB controllers? (Device Manager)
Checked the USB option in the BIOS?

this the only USB Device?

Check the Event Viewer (both system and application) for errors or warnings
