Well, I'm looking into building a HTPC for my sister, since she saw mine and loved it. Now, mine doesn't have a remote, but she insists on having one in hers. What's the least expensive option (barring DIY - too finicky, I don't want to have to fix it when my shitty soldering dies) to get a remote for the PC?

I use a USB-UIRT + Girder + my cable remote programmed to some random code to control my pc. Cost me $58 but it was worth it.

Check the Girder links page, under 'Girder Hardware' for either a universal IR receiver or transceiver (can send and receive, good for controlling other ht components). There are a few premade ones there.

i bought the packard bell fast media from him like 3 years ago and never had a problem i see he has the slim creative on there for dirt cheap and you can find some good software here
uICE

For a non-prgramming side to it, try the Remote Wonder by ATI.

It's a complete package, including the remote (no IR, it uses radio waves, so it won't work for your TV or any other device), the USB receiver, and the software.

I have one on my HTPC, and I love it.

i bought an all-in-wonder graphics card for my htpc and it came with a nice remote for it....it works amazingly well...

Just get the AIW9000 card. Its cheap and it comes with all of the software and equipment you would need for an HTPC box. Not great for gaming, but good for TIVO and playing DVDs.

I've got the ATI Remote Wonder. It's amazing for one because it uses radio signal rather than IR. Therefore, you don't even have to point it at the computer to control it. I've also got it recognized in Girder (http://www.girder.nl) that allows me to control pretty much any program I want!

One of its greatest strengths is also one of its weaknesses. As it uses radio waves to control the computer, this means that it cannot control any IR controlled devices (TV, VCR, etc.). I believe the X10 remote someone linked to will do this added feature. The X10/ATI type remotes are better than any IR-only remote you could find.

BTW: the ATI Remote Wonder 2 look really cool and would be a great remote to have as long as you don't need IR control.

get the ati remote wonder.

word of caution: unless you want to buy 2, don't use it, just set it up. (if you do use it you will be spoiled forever, and will have to have one)

works great.

I bought the Packard bell chepo remote, Works well, got it for 2.99 on ebay

Just bought this to replace it tho
