Ok I have a 8Gb 5400 rpm drive. It's really not big enough to hold much, so what could I use it for?

I have heard of people (after they window mod it) putting the swap file or something on it. I might try to window it in the future. But for now, is there anything I could use it for, that might help speed up things?

Just curious.

I used my spare 8gig (540 RPM, too) to install Redhat just to have something new to try out. Before that, I just used it as a portable My Documents :p

yeah, i'd use it to play around with different OS's.

no reason to put your swap file on something so old and slow.

If you havea bunch of them, you can hook them up with a 4-port RAID controller in a 4-drive RAID0 array... This should give you some helf decent performance (and 32GB of space). :)

Unfortunately I only have one of them... maybe I will try and learn Linux. Thanks for the input guys.

you could always give BeOS a try too. i always thought it was kinda cool.

the alternative OS is a great idea (and if you selct it through the boot oorder in the BIOS it eliminates any complexity of dual booting or boot managers)

an alternative would be a repository for a ghost image

I dual boot W2K\W2K
the reason has to do with both data recovery\repair and security
my system partition (C:/ with the ntldr & boot.ini) is much les susceptible to corruption for power events this way Ive found, and critical system files more protected I think, I rarely boot to it, except to conduct security scans or repairs on the Typical Boot Partition (E:/)

with the OS, security and repair recovery aps its all of 4.19GB
in the event I ever need a "clean" install I simply Ghost back that partition, but since Ive adopted this strategy I havent had to, but I still keep an image of it.

How do I do this... If you remember my other post, this would be a godsend at the moment. I am not sure how to make a ghost image, so is there a guide somewhere you might suggest?

Another option...I just got a firewire enclosure, and it's pretty neat. You can put a HD or CD/DVD in it, and it makes it essentially hot-swappable. An 8GB drive would be a great "portable"...any 'puter with a Firewire port can use it, and without drivers...you just plug it in, and Windows detects it. Something to think about...(USB 2.0, too...)

just bear in mind that 3.5" HDDs arent nearly as robust as the 2.5" laptop variety, and are actually very fragile devices

Ive got a gripe about all these massive IDE 3.5" HDDs being sold as "portable" HDDs, as the general public isnt really very careful with them

I would just keep it in the system and use it as a backup drive for any important items....but if you do that I would ALSO make a secondary copy of said data just in case something happens to that one...I say this because my backup drive took a dump on me 6 months ago and I did loose some stuff (and not just porn either) but I had most of the important stuff on an online drive so just some vacation pics were lost
