My friend said his 17" macbook pro needed a hard drive. I installed a ssd and tried to install high Serra from flash drive. when I boot and hold alt I get a option to install macos high sierra. If i click it I get a circle with a line through it then the computer shuts itself down.
If i boot with new or old hard drive I get the circle with a line through it.
This is the ssd I bought
Crucial MX500 250GB SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD

I think this is the model Macbook pro he has. https://everymac.com/systems/apple/....66-aluminum-17-early-2009-unibody-specs.html
It has this model number on the back A1297

High Sierra isn’t compatible with that model. I believe the max is El Capitan.
It says 10.11 on the page, not sure off the top of my head which one that is.
Start there.

Your right. I'm going to have to figure out where to get it. I cant download it on my mac because it has a later os installed.

If you used previous versions via the App Store, then you can download them (also via the App Store). Open the App Store App, and click the "Purchased" Tab.

I have the first OS that Apple has allowed through the store on mine, since I used my Mac through that time. 2012's Mountain Lion, up to the present, High Sierra.

This is my first mac. It came with high Sierra loaded. I'll research it some more and ask around to see if a friend can download it for me.
