I have a hdd that seems to work after start up
but after awhile my shortcuts and any other way
I try to access it only give me an error the the drive is
not accesable. I tried reformating with pqpm7.
I have ran numerous tests on the drive with norton,
pqpm7, and windows utilities. No luck.
So could this be a bad hdd?

so after startup you can access it, then it goes bad
or does it just show up in the BIOS, My Computer and Disk Management
but you cant access it at all?

if that is the case its probably a permissions issue
disable simple file sharing and take ownership of files and folders

After start up I can access it for awhile (10-15 min).
Then it is not accessable. When I try to access it and
I get a source disk/drive not found message.
I tried scan disk in command promp last night before
I went to bed and then rebooted and let the computer run
all night. I had virus scan and defrag set so the drive was
accessed. This morning it seems to be working fine.
I can still access it and games etc. on it are running.
Dont know what was wrong but I think its fixed.
Knock on wood.

well that rules out any NTFS permissions issues
and opens up the hardware issues can

if it appears again
check your connectors
reroute the cable
replace the cable
run a HDD diagnostic

PATA was never envisioned to operate at the speeds it is currently at,
and arguably it is past its reliable threshold,
depending on the devices\physical configuration,
and IMO it is massively underated at a cuase of data corruption
(the leading causes being first memory, followed by a power event, there are lots of others)

The fact that your getting intermittent connectivity or at least recognition leads me to suspect that first,
though it not the only possible cause, just the most likely

Glad its workin now ;)

Well its actin up again. It dissapeared from my computer,
All my shortcuts give me an error message.
I get this message "The drive or network connection
is unavailable. Make shure that the disk is properly
of the network resource is available, then try again."
This is a drive I just got from a forum member (used).
I have installed other HDD's in the last month with
none of these problems. I am starting to think it may be
the HDD itself.

A little more info. I went into device manager and the drive
was not listed. I scanned for new hardware and there it
was. It is accessable and everything. Why would it dissapear
off the list then windows finds it and it works:confused: .
I have it as a slave on the same cable as my master.
Could sharing the same cable be a problem. it is ata133
cable.
