Ageia PhysX in Issue 7:
We have injected Ageia PhysX into many aspects of CoH/CoV. This new client-side technology will debut with the release of Issue 7. All players will be able to experience some level of physics but those who have an Ageia PhysX Hardware Accelerator will get to see more particles, debris and destruction, thus culminating in a greater sense of immersion. The new PhysX can be turned down or off if a player chooses and should not impact game performance of City of Heroes or City of Villains.
Some of the places that have been updated with PhysX include (but are not limited to) destructible objects (such as crates, barrels, cars, fire hydrants, bus stops, etc.), force reactive objects (such as garbage from trashcans, leaves from a tree, mail from mailboxes, etc.), jointed objects (such as gates that open and close, hanging signs, clothes lines, etc.) and many player power hit reactions. One particular area where many of these assets can be found is the Mayhem Missions.
Once you load into a Mayhem Mission you will be faced with the extraordinary task of reining in your megalomania - so many things, so little time. The city zone before you is packed with objects in desperate need of destruction and you are salvation deified. Destroying world objects gives you a time bonus as well as cool Ageia driven effects. Gust powers can blow destroyed particles around and blasting an enemy near a tree really shows how extraordinary your powers are when leaves are rustled from their branches.
You start by locating large objects like cars and metal crates to see how explosions have been made bigger and better. Cardboards boxes will give you debris that can be affected by your powers and some objects can start chain reactions. Some of the most gratifying destruction is that of the clustered objects in alleyways - showering yourself with the blown up, crumpled and smashed fruits of your labor is what this mission is all about and Ageia makes it happen better.
