which shall it be? My 2100+ is becomming too slow :(

Does the A64 3400+ OC faster then the 3200+?
Is it worth getting the FX-51 over the A64 3400?
When is the scheduled release for the San Diego?

and last but not least...

which mobo/ram combo is best for ocing these bad boys. Thanks

What is your 2100+ clocked at? I am haveing my douts that a Althlon64 3200+ will be any improvement worth the 400 dollar upgrade.

only looking at real time preformence in todays apps and games...i understand that once 64bit is out i must upgrade..

[email protected] btw....

The 3200+ is no longer a $400 processor. The price was dropped to $278 per 1000, while the street price should be lower than that by now.

Okay, the 3400+ performs very, very similarly to the FX-51 and costs much less. The RAM, the motherboard, and the processor itself cost less with a 3400+ system than the FX-51 which is only slightly faster than the 3400+, and in only a select few applications and games. The 3400+ also has probably the best overclocking potential because it was probably made most recently, or was speed-binned (which is also faily promising). The 3200+ is also a fine choice, and perhaps a good overclocker when paired with a good motherboard. It's also a good $100-150 cheaper than the 3400+ for about a 10% performance disadvantage.

edit: I forgot to comment on the San Diego. If you can wait, wait for this processor. It shall arrive sometime this year. If you can wait until April, then you can buy a Socket 939 Athlon 64 or FX at that time and presumably be ready for San Diego when AMD's 90 nanometer process is ready to go. If you buy now, chances are that you'll need a new motherboard, because San Diego is planned for the Socket 939 platform, which will include Athlon 64s and Athlon 64 FXs in the near future.

get an 3000+ oem for around $215 and a mobo for around $100 so thats $315 or you can get a retail 3000+ for $227 with a mobo for $327, which isnt $400. Also that is all stock, im sure that 3000+ can get 2.2ghz easy.

Soon enough now, its looks as though 4000/DDR500 REGISTERED memory will be out for the Athlon FX-51, and they've just bought out 3500 REGISTERED memory. It will clearly be the fatest gaming solution again in about a months time, IMO (assuming the memory makes a difference for the FX - why would they bring out 3500REG if it didn't???).
The FX is very overclockable too. However Half Life 2 and Doom 3 look like they might not be out for a while now and you may as well wait for the new generation of graphics cards to come out. The San Diego will probably be out by the time HL2 and Doom3 get here...

you probely dont want a 300+ because it only has 512k cache, so no matter how high you overclock it (assumming 3200+ speeds) it still will not be as fast as a 3200+, just like a 2100+@ 2.4 vs a Barton 2500+ @ 2.4
