I bought a herc 9800xt and am trying it out on a temporary computer. This computer isn't that great, but I still dont know why my 3dmark score is only 11500 running the video card at 430/380. The specs of this computer are AMD 1800+ (not oced), 40 gig hd, 512 mb of 2100 ram, unknown mobo. This mobo will only let me run at 4x, but i dont think running between 4x and 8x would be THAT great of a difference. Does anyone know whats going on?

which version of 3dmark are you running 2001 se or 2003? and come on don't expect great scores if the system you are on isn't great.....even with a 9800xt is not enough to high score if your on a 500mhz computer

It cant be 2003, there is no way his PC would come close to that.

I recently put in my 9800XT into my little girls SFF case. It has a 1700+, 512 PC2100, etc. I was curious what the score would be, it was almost the same as your, like 12k or something. Put it in another PC to see the difference, with a 3.0c and got right at 18k.

Its just your sub par system, not the card.

comps running at 1.62 ghz and im running 3dmark 2001. But does anyone know how big of a difference running 4x and 8x is?

There is almost no difference between 4x and 8x AGP.

Make sure you have AA/AF off when you bench.

thats a pretty low score i once scored 1043 on 3dmark 2001se on:

P4 2.8Ghz HT (800fsb)
512mb PC2700 ram
120 gig 5400 rpm hard D
Audigy
Geforce FX5600nu
Windows XP home

on that video card i scored a 10k you should be scoreing higher than me on your 9800xt or maybe it was my fast system that helped allot

and on that setup i get a 3109ish on 3dmark 2003

Its your slow ram/cpu combo... get a faster cpu which is about 2.4 and some faster ram at about pc2700 or 3200 and you should see a couple k difference

Yeah, your RAM and mothermoard is your main bottleneck it sounds like. CPU upgrade would help considerably though.

How??? I have gotten better then that on a worse computer!! Although it was pretty sad when I had a hard time breaking 100 on one computer (yes it was 3dMark2001).

mine was 800 on 3dmark 2003.

I'm getting 10000 with 9700np on A 1700+ (KT266 mobo) and 512 MB Kingston PC2700 and even this card is seriously cpu bottlenecked so i suggest looking for new cpu just as I'm doing atm :)

Without a doubt.....get a hold of some new ram and/or a faster CPU. I know how you feel.....having the system bottlenecked like that. When I first got my old 9800Pro I had a slightly oc'ed 1800+ system and 512MB PC2100 DDR (single channel) and with a moderate overclock on the 9800Pro I was only able to "crank" out 13.5k. Now throw the same card in a 3GHz P4 and you'll see the scores jump by 4000 easily.

There may still be a little room left to work for a higher score but not really enough to make it worth it.

Good luck anyways.

you won't see a big jump from a 9800xt in 2001 its true speed benifits are shown when you use something like 2003.

That is a very vague statement that isn't even true. How can you say that you wouldn't see a big jump with the 9800XT??? It depends on what card the person already has. Sure if somebody has a 9800Pro they're not gonna see much change, but if they're upgrading from something like a GF2 then get ready for some nice numbers.

It is true that 2003 is a much more video card oriented "benchmark" but that doesn't mean that you don't see nice gains from something like 3dmark2001. 3dmark03 is still a little more accurate/popular with/for some people 'cus it dips into DX9 with its tests, whereas 3dmark2001 tops out with the Nature Scene in DX8.

3dmark2001 is still a very nice benchmark to use for judging overall system performance before/after upgrades and it's nice to compare with other people to see if where you should be. Dont knock it as a video card test, you might not see gains in it from video card OC's and such like you do in some other tests but it's still valid.....plz dont' confuse ppl by saying that you won't see gains when that's a lie.
