So I'm a poor student and want to get the best bang for buck. What should I get? Canadian prices BTW...

CDRs

CYQ'VE 48x 700MB/80min. Silver 50 CD-R Cake Box $14.99
FujiFilm 48x 700MB/80min. 50 CD-R Spindle $24.99
HP 48x 700MB/80min. 50 CD-R Spindle w/ logo $18.99
Pine 48x 700MB/80min. 50 CD-R Spindle $18.00
Princo 48x 700MB/80min. 50 CD-R Spindle $18.00
RiTEK (RiDATA) 40x 700MB/80min. 100 CD-R Spindle $30.00
Verbatim Vinyl 5 Colours CD-R 25-pack Spindle $17.99
Verbatim 48x 700MB/80min. CD-R 10-pack Spindle $3.49
Verbatim 48x 700MB/80min. 50 CD-R Spindle $24.99
Verbatim 52x 700MB/80min. 50 CD-R Spindle $28.99

I'm thinking of getting the RiTEK 100 for $30 since my NEC2500A can only do 32x anyway. Thoughts? Good, bad, ugly?

And for DVDs...

Pine 4x DVD-R 25-pack $24.99
Pine 4x DVD+R 25-pack $28.99
Princo 2x DVD-RW 50-pack Spindle $70.00
Princo 4x DVD-R 50-pack Spindle $58.00
SmartBuy 4x DVD-R 50-pack Spindle $49.00
SmartBuy 4x DVD+R 50-pack Spindle $50.00
RiDATA (RiTEK) 1-4x DVD-R 25-pack Spindle $30.00
RiDATA (RiTEK) 1-4x DVD+R 25-pack Spindle $35.00
RiDATA (RiTEK) 8x DVD+R 25-pack Spindle $49.00
RiTEK 4x DVD-R 25-pack Spindle $33.00
RiTEK 4x DVD-R 50-pack Spindle $64.00

I'm thinking the same... RiTEK...

1)Stay away from Princo. They suck, to put it mildly.

2)CDRs - Verbatim ought to be amazing, the RiData will work well too.

3)DVDRs - 4X +R or -R Ritek ought to be ok, you might need to flash a modified FW onto that drive, for which you need to head on over to Herrie's website : http://herrie.rpc1.org

I actually just posted a similar question about DVD media on another thread, but I noticed, for example (off Newegg):

RIDATA DVD+R 4.7GB 4X, Model DRD+474-RDCB50, OEM - $33
RIDATA 4X DVD+R 4.7G 50PK, Model DRD+47-4X-RDSM, OEM - $36

And I noticed other instances of basically same brand, speed, quantity - different model numbers - for different price.

How would you go about differiating which one to pick? (In this case the price diff is only 3 bucks, but I remember seeing ones that were larger gaps).

Both go w/ the RiData/Ritec recommendation, and I've checked sites that say both those brands are work pretty well w/ the dvd burner I have in mind, but how do I differitiate within?

Thing is, DVD recordable media is classified into A-grade, B-grade etc, A-grade being the best. RiData is Ritek's own brand, so they get the best Ritek discs. Companies like Bulkpaq, Arita etc. get their B-grade,C-grade stuff. Just go for any RiData, it should be okay. It's very difficult for me to differentiate,at least.

Out of those CD-R's, the FujiFilms are the best there. They're usually rebranded Taiyo Yuden, which is great media. Out of those DVD-R's, the RiTek's. A good trick I learned long ago was to look at the where the media was made, if Taiwan its cheap stuff from companies like CMC Magnetics, if made in Japan its the good stiff like TY, ProDisc, etc.

Prodisc is Taiwan only, tdg ;). Made In Japan = TY,Maxell, some Ricoh, Verbatim.Basically, the good stuff.

D'oh, thats right. I thought they had moved a new plant to Japan but I guess it was China now that I looked again :)
