right now i have dual channel ram by using two sticks its 512MB i was wondering when i want to upgrade can i just add another stick of 512 in the empty slot or do i have to buy two new 512 sticks and replace them with the old ones?

Do you have an AMD motherboard (nForce) with 3 RAM slots? If so, it is possible to run dual channel with 3 sticks.

You see the two RAM slots that are closer to each other? That's channel 0. The one slot off to the side is channel 1. Dual channel will run as long as there is the same amount of memory in both channels. You can have 2x256 of RAM in the two slots that are close (channel 0) and then 1x512 in the lone slot off to the side (channel 1).

Also, it's helpful (usually required) to have the same brand/model of memory in each slot to run dual channel.

If you post your mobo and memory specs, we might be able to help you easier.
