I'm thinking of building a case that would mount the hard drives in this position:

----

----

Would that cause any problems?

What position is that? I can't tell what is supposed to be the hard drive in that picture. You can usually mount a hard drive in about any position and it won't matter much.

As long as it isn't touching circut board to metal, or submerging them, you're fine :)

any position is fine with a modern HDD
even changing the orientation after an extended period is OK
it was not always so, but thats ancient history now ;)

more importantly is oreinting it so its in an airstream for cooling

yeh u can position hd vertical and hoziantal
just dont cover the hole on top of drive. and dont move it while it on, i did that to my old IBM and it died.

awesome. thanks. i was just doodling some prints for my case here.

Take a look and see if it makes any sense. The Side-in view got a little complicated, but basically it mounts my mobo with ports up, and the cdrom an inch and a half above where my cpu fan/heatsink is. The hd's are stacked one on top of the other, under the whole setup, and the PS has the sides taken off so air can go throug.
