Hey everyone,
I have been away for a while but I have a question I think you might be able to answer for me.
Context: We recently upgraded our network at work from HP/Aruba to Cisco switches and AP's. Management told us to "recycle ;)" the old ones. yes, that was in the quote.
so, I now own...
More and more modern games are requiring AVX instructions so it will make a difference as some games won't even be playable in the future. Especially with the launch of a new console generation where they are going to eek out every fps they can by using those instructions.
Hey all,
Currently running an x58 system with a 970 gpu and x5660 processor.
I'm wanting to finally update my core system. I have a budget of around $700 for cpu, ram and mobo. I'll be keeping current storage(1tb sata SSD, 2tb 3.5" drive), PSU (seasonic X750) and my EVGA nvidia 970 SSC for...
I have the parts from my first build but my Mobo is shot ( blown caps) and the company is now defunct (Abit). that was a great board though. IC7-G Max2 Advance. originlly I had it in a Thermaltake Xaser 3 in blue which was a beast of a case, swapped it later with an Antec superlanboy.
Thanks, but that would keep me at 12 gb. I only have 3 slots working so I would need 3x8 to go up. 3x4 is just 12gigs and I have 12gb 1866 now.
I will add that since I'm running a Xeon, high speed ECC memory will work too.
Looking for 3x8 gig sticks to upgrade my aging X58 build. DDR31866 if possible but 1600 would work fine as well. I lost a memory slot so I went from 18 down to 12 and some games dont run well (or even at all, ashes of singularity, star citizen) anymore.
waiting for that 12 core 5Gz stock CPU at a reasonable price. Still running my 6 core, 12 thread aging 2.6Ghz X5660 Xeon. Double the Cores, Double the stock frequency. ( Yes, I know IPC improvements have left my baby in the dust) Should make for an upgrade I can "feel" when I finally get...
Still running this in my main rig (see sig). Purchased from hardocp's recommendation. I will really miss the power supply reviews. I always recommend seasonic in builds now (though most clients opt for something cheaper or more "gaming" related). My next build will probably have a seasonic...
I don't think this is aimed at enthusiasts. At the same time, the quest is aimed for the mainstream. This "might" be an entry level enthusiast machine and if it goes down to $299 I would consider getting one. I had the DK2 and have used a vive but I currently don't have an HMD anymore (Dk2...
The only thing I am interested in regarding Ray tracing is when it is coming to VR. It will be a while at least but I would go for a dedicated ray tracing card if it was needed to implement in VR. The addition to immersion would be crazy!
wow, baby steps. they now have a base that can be used for ~75% of the experience of PC without the wires. The only things they have left is eye tracking and foveated rendering ( Which will reduce the graphical requirements). I mean, i am interested in this but i have a dk2, so this would be...
Ok, good news!?
I went back to basics and decided to start removing things one at a time until back to basics.
First thing I removed is an older 802.11g card I have kept in my system as a backup. Lo' and behold, all 18 gigs are detected! I am now going to swap my old processor back in as as...
Well, it's not the memory controller on the cpu. Swapped it for a Xeon a friend of mine had. Same issue.
I have seen a couple of posts about issues with ram not being detected correctly. I have tried increasing the voltage on qpi and the ram bus. Niether works. When all my sticks are in, I...
I like mine. I have had it since January 2010.
My next case is probably going to be ITX though. These days I want something more easily moved. The thing is a tank.
Now I will say, with the Advent of VR, the top mesh part of my case is hardly ever on it anymore. I find myself moving cables...
Well. Something gave out on my x58 setup. I'm not sure if it's the x5660 or the motherboard. Basically, my top memory slot is dead. That decreased my available RAM from 18 to 12. Also for some reason I can't get a stable overclock anymore and stuck at 2.8.
Needless to say, this has really...
I dont have much love for apple, but I think Steve Jobs would be rolling in his grave because of this design. I mean, he spent extra money to make things appear PERFECT. every millimeter of the device from every angle had to be amazing both inside and out. ( He had the engineers redisign the...
same here. Im still running X58 because I havent had that much reason to upgrade. I have a 6-core 12 thread Xeon. Might look into upgrading next year just for other features though. DDR4, M.2 SSD's, faster IPC, lower Power consumption, new instruction sets, PCIE 3.0 ( maybe 4.0 by next year)...
Kaspersky just mentioned its not a variant of Petya but something new. 2k infections so far, mostly in russia/ukraine.
Edit: Link:
hahaha, Kaspersky has named it NotPetya, lol.
You do know that 4G LTE ( Which all the carriers use) is based on GSM right? CDMA is used for the 3G service and actually has its advantages. This is why Verizon 4G phones require a SIM card, a GSM Technology.
EDIT: Just wanted to point out that while everyone uses pretty much the same tech...
I dont understand this. The actual IT admin/manager should have done what is common practice and even taught on certs such as security+ ( Last time I looked at it was 2005 but it was there).
REVOKE PERMISSIONS before you layoff/fire someone.
Seriously. even IT helpdesk at my current job...
Shall I link the poll where the developers asked the community if they wanted to halt the scope so that it's a smaller game or continue and push for more but it would take longer?
FYI, the community chose to keep expanding.
Hmmm, Wonder if my Westmere-EP (X5660 Xeon) will last until icelake-S or icelake-X. X58 is getting long in tooth, I have USB 3.0 but dont have support for NVME, PCIE 3.0, or USB 3.1. Hope I can make it another 2 years. It should be a pretty substantial upgrade then.
I'm a little confused. how is this different than a process shrink? why does a little less power, and a little more density need a whole new architecture?
I remember when I moved back in with my parents for a bit after college. The only internet available where they lived was dial-up or satellite. luckily I had an unlimited 3g smartphone. ( This was around 2007) I was still able to use internet and play some games via usb tethering. Kept my...
I have 200mb down, no cap at suddenlink. Honestly, I don't see the reason for gigabit at this time. Would it be nice downloading Star Citizen PTU builds? yes. As it is, it only takes me around 15-20 minutes for a 30 gig file. It would cost $30 more for gigabit but I would need a new modem...
This is easy. Put in a weak power supply and an aftermarket crappy video card (that meets their requirements but draws up to the limit or slightly over). Throw in 2-3 slow hard drives that are old and failing. Same with the memory. Lots of ways to get around this. Set it up that it will...
ive been here a while and this is one of the first reviews I dont agree with. Pointing out a fairly serious design flaw that can end up damaging your other peripherals and then still giving it a "gold" award baffles me. It should be a silver award at best. I would have given it a bronze with...
In this case I think comcast isnt totally at fault. Someone Spoofed their cable box ID. I mean if you had an account with equipment on it and you saw the id number for the equipment on that account buying stuff, you would assume its okay. In addition, I am positive comcast gets many calls...
Same here. Running 4.2 Ghz on an X5660. Also have 18 gigs of Ram and a 970. My X58 Board already has USB 3.0 and Sata 6.0. ( Asus P6x58d-Premium)
Now I will admit that I recently built a friend a computer using an I5-6600k and an AMD 380 Card. That, for some reason felt smoother than my pc...
I have used this program for a while now ( ever since dk2 came out) Its fun to pay with but the dk2 resolution is a bit too poor to make it useful. Generally I do use it watch 3d movies every now and then.
