4 TB hard drives are pretty cheap nowadays too, so 4x4 TB in RAID 5 or 10 would probably be sufficient. The main reason for wanting a system where data is effectively cached accessed locally instead of constantly being pulled off the network would be to decrease network lag and make it faster to...
Dropbox does LAN sync, but that wouldn't stop it from also doing internet sync, which would quickly turn out internet connection into mush. I'd prefer to not spend our entire bandwidth on syncing files to remote storage. Dropbox isn't very expensive, but it does kind of add up. Dropbox Teams for...
Hi everyone,
I work at a small company. It's not a single company, as such. It's sort of half-way between an ad agency and a rent-an-office sort of space. We're a bunch of people all running our own companies, but we do a certain degree of work together as well. Up until now, we don't actually...
I'm not that concerned about the power consumption, to be honest. It's not like the TV will be running non-stop, and electricity is really cheap in Sweden anyway.
Not sure which way to go with plasma vs LCD. I suppose the main purpose of the TV, in terms if image quality, is to make it nice...
I wasn't sure whether to post this here, or in Displays. If this is the wrong place, can a mod perhaps move it? :-)
Anyway. I'm planning on buying a new TV this year. Due to the size of the room and such, I'm thinking in the 40"-50" range. The idea is to build a HTPC or something similar...
Is it just me, or are Adobe pouring all their non-assholeness into Lightroom?
Look at their other products... Inflated prices, weird upgrade deals, horrendous pricing for non-US customers, platform lock-in, etc etc etc. But with Lightroom, one license for both Mac and Windows. Install on any...
Houdini is very inexpensive for non-commercial use (free with watermarked renders; $99 without). I find it rather easy to use, but it's very technical in its nature and is geared towards... well, techy stuff. Procedural content creation and stuff like that. That's not to say that you can't use...
Well, I have the W520 now so here's a mini-mini review:
I'm very pleased with performance. The quadcore i7 is easily 4-5 times faster at rendering than my previous Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro. This makes a huge difference in my work. I have installed Lightroom, but I haven't yet transferred my...
If you do start using the LR3 trial, and LR4 isn't released within a month, keep in mind that you cannot import LR3 libraries into the LR4 beta.
I'd probably just go with using the LR4 beta, to be honest. I gave it a whirl the other day, and it seems fine. I didn't see any show-stopping bugs...
Ouch, that's a pretty poor customer service review.
I think I'm going to go with the Lenovo anyway, though, and just hope for the best. The W520 and M4600 are similarly-specced, but the final price is just too big a difference. With some coupons and config tweaks (like buying memory and...
So just a die shrink though, right? I take it Intel are still doing their new architecture every other year, followed by die shrink the next year. So the only real difference would be a potentially higher clock frequency with the same power consumption. Or the same clock frequency with better...
Oh goddamnit, that's the opposite of what I was expecting. :( Is Dell build quality any better, though? I mean, I only have limited experiences with Precisions. I used a Precision workstation at a games company for about eight or nine months and it was great, but I have no idea how long they...
The W520 with a quad-core, 16 gigs of RAM and a Quadro 2000 with 2 gigs of VRAM is just under £1800, including sales tax. That's really not too shabby! A bit on the heavy side, but nothing too outrageous. Any thoughts on the screen on the Lenovo? They claim 95 % Adobe RGB gamut, but based on...
I ended up buying an Airport Express. It's small, and gets the job done. I'll look into getting a more comprehensive solution at some point in the future —potentially a HTPC.
Thanks for all the advice!
I've currently got a 2008-model Macbook Pro (the first of the unibody ones) with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, and it's been a good laptop for my needs, with (for the time, anyway) reasonably powerful GPU and CPU, a decent amount of memory, and relatively low weight. I'm looking to replace it, and I'm...
The WD stuff doesn't have any built-in wifi, right? And they are unable to act as a wifi hotspot. So then I'd have to buy another device.
But I guess I could buy something along the lines of this and stick some Linux dist on it.
So, now the question that remains: can I have this box...
I'm moving in with my girlfriend, and her current network situation is basically a single Cat 5 cable coming out of the wall going into her laptop. I assume there is some kind of switch system in the building, but we have no control over it (obviously). As far as we're concerned, all we have is...
I was obviously not being entirely serious. I just mean they've been doing it for a really long time the first Video Toaster was released like 20 years ago.

SpeedEdit is supposedly really good. A few friends of mine swear by it. NewTek have more experience in the editing business than most of these upstarts combined. :p
Anything that can be viewed on a monitor, can be copied. Seriously, you might as well give up. The ONLY thing your "layers of annoyance" will accomplish, is making your web site annoying for the legit visitors. Fuck that shit, and just use normal images. Or Flash. That's an easy 'fix.'
iTunes has always run fast on all computers I've tried it on, except my old iMac but that was just because it was a 233MHz machine. :p I'm sorry that you're having problems, but I would just like to point out that NO, in fact, iTunes doesn't suck on every single machine. I've run it on a regular...
This is actually incorrect. MP4, or AAC, is no more proprietary than MP3 and has wide support with non-Apple software and hardware. Not as wide as MP3, no, but wide enough for it to be a non-issue for most people. MP4 generally trounces MP3 for quality-per-bit rate. Apple have ditched or are in...
It is, isn't it? Just a shame they stopped developing it.
Webkit, same as Safari 3. I don't think it passes ACID3, but I don't have many compatibility issues with it.
Oh certainly! Stand-alone monitors are not necessarily better than laptop displays. The display in my Macbook Pro is head and shoulders better than my piece-of-shit Samsung 24" (245b) TN panel. But Apple or Eizo or what have you stand-alone displays are significantly better than both. They...
The Macbook Pro is sort of ok, but it is still a TN display. You can do color sensitive work using it, but it does involve guesswork. If color accuracy is crucial, don't get an Apple laptop. In fact, don't get a laptop.
Why not just say 10 AH, then?
Besides, 10 AH means a current of roughly 0.9 Ampere. Laptop batteries are usually in the ~10-15 V range, I believe. That means a power consumption of about 10-15 watts. That seems awfully low.
Really? That's just fucking depressing, that is. Oregon Trail would probably run on my TI-83, for crying out loud!
Well yeah, but fine-tuning assembler can't make an ancient CPU able to compete with the ARM or whatever the iPhone is using, even when it's bogged down with the OS.
Eh, not really. Most of Apple's high-end products are significantly cheaper than the equivalent sold by anyone else. Apple's Cinema Display monitors are traditionally reasonably cheap when compared to others of the same quality (I don't know about the latest gen, though). The Mac Pro is a...
