    Intranet site help!

I'm having an issue wrapping up our intranet site (IIS6, server 2003). I want to find a way to display remote folders and files that people can download. For example, site is hosted on server1 but files are on server2, I have linked to server2 files with virtual directories and used directory...

Server 2003 Shared Drive Password Prompt

If you aren't worried about security, which it doesn't seem that you are, you can enable the guest account and add that to the share. That will take care of the username/password (or lack thereof) issue.

    backup solution

What were you trying to do with Veritas? I've found their Backup to Disk feature works pretty well, but we've used it only on a limited basis.

    backup solution

You know, a good DAT drive isn't TOO much more and (in my opinion) more reliable. I had some firmware issues with the Iomega drives but maybe that's bunk. Also, the built in backup software in 2k3 is quite impressive (as opposed to 2000) and will do Exchange, etc... Also, the tapes on the...

    backup solution

Sure. The issue we had was we had a full completed image stored on a NAS, booted to their CD and connected to the NAS, and when we tried to load the image to restore we go a generic error (0x0000000) and no good assistance from Acronis. I wouldn't have left my backups to this software with a...

    backup solution

To the OP, anything that has SQL or Exchange options to purchase are typically going to be higher cost, close to Veritas. Is it 2k3 or 2000? The built in backup does pretty good for a lot of my clients although I do prefer the Veritas. You also have the built in option in SQL to do a file...

    backup solution

I've used the Acronis AND the Symantec System State products. Did not have great success with either. We did a test restore on blank hardware and it wouldn't even load the image. Company wasn't much help, and this is unfortunate because we built a smaller part of the infrastructure around it...

Three site VPN on the cheap?

Yeah. That's the main factor is deciding what you want to do and THEN seeing what the solution to that would be. I've even gone from one solution that worked great over VPN that after an upgrade went down 50%. They said it was due to the new database engine, but that wasn't part of the docs...

Three site VPN on the cheap?

I've been assuming it was DSL or cable (which usually have poor up speeds) due to their lack of wanting to spend the cash. Could be wrong, I'll wait to hear from the OP.

Three site VPN on the cheap?

Quickbooks doesn't work well over a VPN (from past experiences). You may want to look at Terminal Services or segregating the QB company file in to portions for each division. Quickbooks pulls over the whole file when opening and closing, and they range from 20MB to over 100MB in size.

Three site VPN on the cheap?

We've used Sonicwall routers in the past to site to site and site to multisite VPNs with no issues. Not CHEAP (as in free) but not too expensive depending on the user count. With a Win2k or 2k3 setup I think all your PCs would need to route through the box as well (in a PTP setup) and I'm not...

Windows Remote Assistance - Requirements? Alternatives?

I absolutely disagree with this, but we have different clients. all of my clients with more than five computers has a central server of some sorts. look at it as more of an opportunity to upsell and provide better service (which a server provides).

Windows Remote Assistance - Requirements? Alternatives?

Do they have internal servers? Usually we can RDP in to the server and then RDP from there to each workstation. There's a GP that sets up the firewall and allows RDP connections so any new workstation is up for management. If they don't, I guess it's a bit more difficult. You could, however...

VPN Server Setup in Windows XP

In the advanced portion of the tcp/ip properties you uncheck the "use remote gateway" option. This is done on the connecting machine.

Windows Mobile 5 and Exchange 2003

There's an issue with needing to load a program on the handheld when you sign a cert yourself as opposed to purchasing one. We had to load this on our XV6600s but I can't remember the name. It was a script that let you use the cert that you manually created.

How can I convince my father to switch from IE to FireFox?

I use IE. I'm a network admin. I haven't seen the real reasons to switch as of yet (other than extensions). I have no spyware, no viruses, no malware, no trojans (that i know of! :p ). You just have to be smart about it. If he's smart, why switch?

What sort of jobs are out there?

That sounds like the right way to go about things. Certs used to be the mainstream way to judge a new hire, but that has been replaced by experience. However, once you have experience and a good sound grasp on the things you'll be working on, you won't have a problem getting a job on the...

Remote into a file server, then...

You'd do a VPN passthrough on the router, and setup VPN access on the server. You'd need to forward port 1723 to the server and make sure your router can pass through those packets (not sure of your model).
  28. C

What sort of jobs are out there?

Just as a heads up, you usually don't just jump in to network admin work. You have to work in the lowly sneakernet department first even though you don't want to, and it's usually best that way. I know it seems like you should be able to just jump right in, but it's good to get some experience...

    Bad Day

I find that sometimes in my line of work I just don't have the luxury of waiting. It's really sad and scary at times. However, we don't do things that would affect any large amount of people, and it's usually at the customer's request, but "I want this Norton junk OFF my network" is an awfully...

    Bad Day

We worked with Adelphia and there would be lots of underground cuts done by careless people who didn't know any better. But if I'm in someone's building, working on ANY type of wiring, I rarely cut. It never seems to make sense. Find a way around cutting and you can save yourself lots of...

    vista release date?

Right, for the most part. If you buy a $499 PC, you get a $499 PC. Get one from their business line and pay $1,200 for it, and you get $1,200 worth. They stock better parts on those models, have better support (Small Business machines (Optiplex) have U.S. based support), and are generally...

    Antivirus Lineup!!!

I agree. I've been selling NAV for some time now but it seems to be WAY too much money and way too bloated. It doesn't do $4,000 worth of stuff for less than 50 users.

Any and all input is valued!!! We have been looking at some solutions for our customers and wanted some input on what everyone here thought. In the past, we have installed NAV Corporate and found it to be decent at best. Client machines not updating (botched Live Update usually) and...

Alternatives to MS for a server

I haven't yet found anything that has done all of these and done them seemingly transparent. There are workarounds, patches, etc... to get you close, but not exact (thus far). If anyone can prove me wrong, please do!

    suggestions for outside file transfer

I'd say that you should do the VPN (either to the server or to a capable router) as it gives you flexibility in the future. But RDC open to the desktop is secure as well, just not flexible.

    Two questions (CSS and flash)

Thanks both of you, that'll really help me out. I was hoping for an easy way to convert this template to a more structured DIV/CSS combo, but it doesn't seem that way. I'll have to look up an IF statement to check on flash as well unless someone knows a site?
