If you aren't worried about security, which it doesn't seem that you are, you can enable the guest account and add that to the share. That will take care of the username/password (or lack thereof) issue.

Quickbooks doesn't work well over a VPN (from past experiences). You may want to look at Terminal Services or segregating the QB company file in to portions for each division. Quickbooks pulls over the whole file when opening and closing, and they range from 20MB to over 100MB in size.

In the advanced portion of the tcp/ip properties you uncheck the "use remote gateway" option. This is done on the connecting machine.

You can use Veritas Volume Replicator or FRS in Windows 2003 depending on how well you need this to work (volume, changes, etc...).

You'd do a VPN passthrough on the router, and setup VPN access on the server. You'd need to forward port 1723 to the server and make sure your router can pass through those packets (not sure of your model).

I'd say that you should do the VPN (either to the server or to a capable router) as it gives you flexibility in the future. But RDC open to the desktop is secure as well, just not flexible.
