I'll second (and/or third) Veeam. I use it for my workstations and my VMs, it's incredibly simple to use, and it works well. For backing up my large media folders however, I use Allway Sync.
A separate access point for wireless. I use the Ubiquiti AP-AC-LR at home, and will be adding one or two more for additional coverage. I use a separate switch since I have 14 network cables that need to be connected right now.
What services/packages are you running? Your connection is only 40/20, right? Doing some research, I need overkill in order to have the fastest speed possible with what I'm going to use the router for. 1000/250 with VPN takes a huge toll on the CPU. Even with the most impressive setups, people...
I'm not worried about power so much. I understand that T isn't designed for lower power consumption, but moreso for environments where heat is in issue. Microcenter does have the i3-7100 for $115 that's clocked at 3.9GHz, which wouldn't be bad, since the 7350K isn't on Asus' supported CPU list...
I wonder if the below gear would work. I want front I/O, and everything here looks good. I don't believe the chipset on the mobo will be able to utilize the K though....
ASUS RS200-E9-PS2-F 1U Rackmount Server LGA 1151 - $512...
There's a substantial difference between 40/20 and 1000/250, especially when I want to run OpenVPN on the router. The faster the CPU, the faster the speed through OpenVPN. In some tests I've seen, users are getting only up to 300 Mbps through VPN (which isn't nothing to complain about) on a...
Thanks all. It sounds like pfSense is the route I should go. I'll start a build thread on their forums to figure out which hardware I should use when having 1000/250 Mbps connection with some VPN. I want to make sure that the CPU I get will be able to get the best speeds possible for the price.
That's disappointing, and what I was worried about. I wish Mikrotik's GUI wasn't as terrible as it is, and I wish the quality of the hardware/chassis was nicer. I think I'm leaning towards the pfSense or alternative route. However, I still want to make sure that I get the hardware right.
I...
That's kinda what I'm thinking. No NAT or QoS is a turn-off for me. I'm looking at something like the link below. What sort of CPU specs should I look for when being a power-user and running pfSense or something comparable? I want to make sure that I have some headroom and am not going to run it...
Cincinnati Bell Fioptics is getting installed next week, and I'm going to get their 1000 Mbps by 250 Mbps connection using fiber to the home. This will be a major improvement to my 8/3 WISP PPPOE connection that I'm getting fed up with because my internet is controlled by my county's fiscal...
Oh no, it's cool Bigdady92, I know you weren't knocking it. :D
There was a guy on Craigslist that had 4 of those cabinets. I wish I would have bought them all, but I only picked up the 1. I live around Cincinnati, and find a good deal on a rack or cabinet on Craigslist every now and then. I'm...
And by the time I get there, the big leagues will be in the 250TB+ range. I'm not in it to compete. I think it's a great opportunity to see how others have their home rigs setup, and to steal ideas. I wouldn't have gotten my used Supermicro chassis' without seeing how much of an improvement it...
Thanks, I thought so too! I have housemates and that AP's wireless is just for me and my gear. I couldn't really mount it anywhere, wanted it to be close to all my other equipment but didn't want to put it inside the cabinet (for fear of degraded wireless signal), and didn't want anything on top...
Correct. That's the plan. Now, we'll still be able to watch all 9 cameras live, but if I were to record 9 cameras constantly, at high resolution, then that would equate to roughly 70TB of storage space to be used in 30 days. Setting it up to only have a couple cameras record constantly, and then...
Minimum of 9 cameras, but maybe more. We'll use the highest quality settings, getting the max resolution, framerate, etc. Maybe only 1 or two cameras will be recording constantly, the rest will only record from being motion activated.
I had thought about this. Do you have any good resources to find said used gear?
It was my understanding that the CPU needs to have plenty of power for encoding. Is this not the case?
I had thought about R10, but the performance of R5 with those cameras should be sufficient. If not, I can...
In this thread, I'll be asking for some advice on building a surveillance server, cameras, and a pair of switches. I already got advice on fiber to connect two buildings, here.
The goal is to connect fiber between two buildings, a house, and a garage that's 500 ft. away. The server, 16-24 port...
I was looking to purchase 9 Hikvision cameras and build a server with a 4TB RAID array to have all of the cameras record to. Is it true that Hikvision cameras, even using software like Milestone or Blue Iris, won't be able to record to that large partition? If that's true, then why would anyone...
I tried storage spaces once, and I won't use it again unless they make major improvements. The software array dropped a drive. I tested the drive, and it was fine, but it wouldn't take it back in, nor would it take any others. So, I tried rebuilding it with the drives that it had left, and then...
I know... I know. Once I get the HDDs for the backup server, I'll copy my data over and then redo the existing array in RAID6 or RAID50 instead of RAID5.
When I added 4x 4 TB drives to extend the array, it took a little over 7 days to add the drives. If one drive fails, I'd hate for another...
Total storage between both servers: 55.19 TB
Gear neatly organized in a Dell 24U rack I scored on Craigslist for $150, with a Cisco Aironet mounted on the front.
Mikrotik Routerboard RB2011UiAS-RM up top, with some cheap 16-port Netgear gigabit switch that will need to be replaced...
Some info before we start:
Windows 2012R2
IBM M5015 HBA
10x 4TB HGST NAS HDDs
I recently added 4x 4TB drives to my existing R5 array with 6x 4TB drives. This brought the array to, you guessed it, 10x drives at 32.7TB, formatted. The process took a week, as I didn't want to scrub the data and...
Thanks for the info. I think I'll see if I can get a pre-terminated 500 ft. fiber cable, to hopefully save some money from having to get someone out to terminate it after it's ran. So, I need to use LC connectors for single-mode, and get single-mode transceivers for the SFP connector on the...
First off, some info:
My parents have moved onto a new property, where they build a pole barn garage, and are now building a house. My dad and I are planning on installing at least 6 exterior cameras on the house, and 4 on/in the garage (surveillance server in the house), with WiFi in both...
...that work with SuperMicro cases, you might want to check out APC AR8129's. I was able to pick up a pair for $20 each on ebay, new in box.
I've been looking everywhere for cable management arms that weren't $100 or more, which is just a crazy price for such a thing, but stumbled upon these...
I rigged a fan to force air onto the heatsink of my IBM M5015 (below), but I'd like to find a better way (the proper way) to cool the card. How do you cool your RAID/HBA controllers? What would be the best method of cooling my M5015?
I currently have 16GB in my host, which is okay, but I'll plan on getting 32GB in the new server. I don't intend on needing anymore than that.
So far, here are the components that I have decided on:
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1241V3
MOBO: ASRock E3C224-4L
RAM: Kingston 8GB KVR16LE11/8KF (x4)...
It appears that the best valued CPU in an E3 is the 1241V3, while the 2620V3 is the best valued CPU for an E5. Schizrade would probably do the E3, but which CPU would be best for what I'm looking to do? Currently, Microcenter has the E3 for $229.99, while the E5 is $339.99. That's a $110...
Thanks for your input. I will definitely look into that.
I will be using Hyper-V in Server 2012 R2. USB 3.0 isn't necessary, but SATA 3.0 is. I'd like to run my system drive and VM drives from the motherboard rather than the backplane. That way the OS's can't lose performance from the almost...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
This will be my primary NAS server (36+ TB) as well as my virtual host. I plan on running 3-4 VMs with this.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$800 + the cost of the storage HDDs
3) Which...
Not that I've noticed, and I'm basing that off of my UPS. I only removed the 2nd PSU because of the fan noise. I tried unplugging one of the fans, but the machine wouldn't boot. Which, I'd say is a nice feature, but these things are too loud. Granted, it's my own fault for using a server chassis...
