That's what I did.. got rid of my Z170N Gaming 5 which I never really used (because TB supporrt is a must with my peripherals) and bought a brand new Z270 Gaming itx/ac - that way I could sell my "temporary" ATX TB3 mainboard from gigabyte as well.
hey brams, that's no error on the Z170N Gaming 5. I do have a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 as my running system, using the same Startech TB1/2-TB3 adapter gives me exactly the same message.
Do you have a reference to the hackint0sh link?
what bios version on your mainboard ?
Btw. it's based on the Intel Alpine Ridge chip, nothing like "roughly patched-on".. The Z170N Gaming 5 just lacks the official certification for Thunderbolt 3.
I just got word that my TB2 to TB3 adapter is coming in about two to three weeks; I'm hoping to...
There actually is a water block für the DCMOC version of the Asus GTX 970 Mini, it's called "Alphacool NexXxoS GPX GTX 970 M07" (Compatibility List here)
My order on Amazon for the TB to TB3 adapter from StarTech is getting pushed back again and again.. (from early March to mid June atm) .. annoying :/ same for the release of the TB3 dock.
Meanwhile Akitio announced a similar adapter for old TB equipment, model T3T. Unfortunately, they have not...
Popstar: what Bios version do you have on the Z170N Gaming 5 ?
I'm still waiting for my StarTech TB to TB3 adapter, pre-ordered at Amazon.com; shipment already postponed two times.. mid may is the new ETA :(
I don't see the need for HDMI ports that don't support high display refresh rate at high resolutions. And you only need two NICs for specific requirements. It all comes down to what you are plan on doing with your build - there's a mainboard for everyone's need ..
my need is TB for my...
thanks mate!
Yesterday, I did see the update on the Gigabyte page but couldn't download because of some server error, right now it worked :)
Did you enabled TB3 in the bios or did you modify the file?
It's unfortunate that there are no adapter on the market yet, I'm also waiting for one of...
it does not actually matter how they call it in the manual..
the only standalone chip for USB 3.1 from Intel is a Thunderbolt chip, it's a Intel® DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 Controller on the Z170N Gaming 5 mainboard, the same chip as used on the Impact VIII.
btw. "Intel USB 3.1. chip" has been...
Nope, the manual is actually correct at this point because they used a thunderbolt "Alpine Ridge" chip for USB 3.0/1 connectivity.
Standard performance for USB 3.0/3.1 is a maximum of 10Ggps, using an Intel Thunderbolt DSLxxx chip gives you a little advantage over standard because you...
It's surprisingly hard to get details about mainboards if it doesn't have to do with marketing crap. So you're welcome! :)
About a month ago, I decided for a double-barreled approach.. ordered the Impact VIII from Amazon DE (ETA by the time: late November) and a Z170N Gaming 5 from Amazon UK...
Hi brams,
there is a 1142 chip from ASmedia and it's an USB chip but there's none with K.
I know what you're talking about but don't worry about the chip on the Impact VIII.
After reading the manual I was shocked as well but that ASM1442K chip is for multimedia purpose not USB.
I took a...
Hi brams,
thanks for your looking into this.
I did check out the newest Impact VIII Bios myself and was happy to see so many TB options already prepared to see the light :D
And I just came home from the postal office where I picked up my Asus mainboard - unfortunately I'm still waiting...
there's no limitation to storage-only.
For example, if you want 4K display resolutions with 60hz you most probably connect through TB3 on a Gigabyte board.
most HDMI connections only allow 4K @ 30hz because they're based on HDMI 1.4 standard.
Does anybody know the cubic parts in this pic^
they seem to be part of the water loop, tightened to the case and maybe some kind of secure outlet ?!
thanks in advance :)
btw. already sent a message to Printermeow ^ but no reply :(
no need to dremel anything on your pcb!
just take out the pin clamp, case side. and you might have to take off one of the side-panel-pins that hits the pcb from above.
using a watercooler to replace the heatpipes is a definite plus for not bending and heating the side panel :)
here are two pictures of an Asus Strix 970 and the NCase M1..
It's kind of a battle to squeeze the card in the case.
because of the high pcb you get in trouble with the metal for the side panel clamps - you have to take one of them out! and the pin from the side panel hits exactly the top of...
I will get my Strix 970 today - on my way to the postal office. But unfortunately, my M1 v2 departed yesterday from New York, waiting eagerly :D
will post my experiences^
yeah, same here.
I don't understand why they announce something without even having one single piece of power supply to show - labeling an old psu is kind of lame.. leaving us wondering when to expect it
I do have a Ivy Bridge VisionX, 321B, and I think it's a great catch if you can get it at a low price from ebay, .. I can't complain about the noise level, I even upgraded to a i7-3740qm.
dedicated 7850 is a nice to have, just about right to use as a steam-'in-house-stream'-'receiver' :)
Sad to see that you removed that option for new customers - now we have to order at least two times (that doubles international shipping  ), one for the M1 and possibly for additional parts from you guys.
But no time to whine about it (right now), just placed an order *happy* finally -...
you made my day..
just saw your signature while reading through the M1 thread.. followed your threads and I have to say, THANK YOU for your log!
:D I was thinking about changing my gaming equipment from my Phenom to the M1 but was not sure if it would work out.
Now I have to order that...
