Help with setup for HTPC -> Yamaha RX-V683BL 7.2 Receiver

Does your TV have an eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) HDMI port on it? If so connect your receiver to that HDMI port and connect the PC directly to your TV. It looks like your receiver supports eARC through a firmware update (2.70). The eARC port supports full 7.1 audio and Dolby Atmos. If...

Are you going for reference Big Navi/RTX 3xxx or waiting for AIB offers?

I'll probably go for the 3080 Ti Founders Edition card as soon as it drops. I currently have a 1080 Ti Founders Edition and it has been a great card.

Hold out for 10900k, grab 10700, or just go with a discounted 9900K?

I went with a 10700k, but had the same dilemma as you. I see you already made a choice and can't blame you for the decision. There really isn't much difference between the two CPUs so I don't think you'll regret it. I'm sure you'll skip LGA1200 altogether.

All I know is demand is pretty high for 10th gen unlocked chips. I'm sure they'll sell out quickly.

Yeah I missed this one by like 5 seconds. Must have only had one in stock.

Is there an app for setting custom screen resolution on Win 10?

There is an option in the VNC Client I'm using (RealVNC Viewer 5.2.3) to scale the display to the window size. This should do what you're wanting. No custom resolution necessary.

No excitement about intel's latest offering??

Completely agree here - I'm still on a 2600k (at 4.6Ghz, mind you) and it hasn't felt slow for the past 7 years I've had it.

Unable to reach one specific URL, from other locations URL is working fine

I, personally, wouldn't host a private cloud outside of a private VPN. If you need to share this private cloud with family members - setup a VPN server / endpoint and give them a login to it so they will essentially be on your network. For one you can control DNS, IP addressing, etc. Keep them...

    Zotac REFURB - 1060 3GB - $98, 1060 6GB - $119, AMP - $126 + Tax/Ship

Yes, $180 is close to $160. I've seen a couple BF deals this week for $180-$190 after rebate. Granted taxes would be added to that depending on where you live, and you'd have to count on the rebate actually showing up, but when we're talking a $160 vs a $200 investment I think it's worth it to...

    Zotac REFURB - 1060 3GB - $98, 1060 6GB - $119, AMP - $126 + Tax/Ship

Taxes and Shipping and Handling killed this deal for me. That brings the total to close to $160 which is too close to retail price for a new card when they're on sale.

Need New keyboard mech no budget..

Are you sure you want Cherry MX blue? I'd recommend browns if you want some tactility. The noise will get annoying after a while, unless it's pleasing to you. I've never used a Das keyboard, but I hear they have had some QC issues of late. Some other brands to take a look at would be Ducky...

Fire TV (2015) vs NVidia Shield

I haven't been able to get this to work. I bought an Nvidia shield with the additional remote and it seems to stop audio on one device when I plug the other in. How did you get it to work? In addition to all of your comments I'd like to add that Kodi can be installed on the Android TV...

    Epic games?

Any of the following would work: Skyrim, MGSV, The Witcher 3, or Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor. Depends on what type of game you like to play.

I beat Dishonored today, great game, does not warrant a sequel

This is another title on my list to play that I started but haven't put much time into. I'll definitely have to get around to playing it now, but Metal Gear Solid V: TPP has my interest currently. Thanks for the write up / review.

How many old farts here stil play pc games?

I'm just 37 here and I feel like the majority of people I play with are in their teens to mid-twenties. I played MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft for years on end and quit completely just recently. I play PC games exclusively, but my kids play console games mostly. I've been...

    Best forum for C++ beginner?

You need a project and a purpose. Start with modifying code projects already built and tweak them just to see how things work or simply study them to see how they were coded. Granted, a lot of it is going to be very confusing without a decent understanding of C++ basics. I'd recommend a college...

Cherry Realkey Technology will be featured in their new line of keyboards.

They make it sound like Cherry has never made a keyboard before. They have and still make many keyboards. While this looks interesting, I don't think I'd pay over $200 for lower latency as I'm not an uber gamer. Clearly not marketed toward the average user.

500 Million ASUS Motherboards. The Celebration Starts at [H]. - Lucky Draw

I have owned several Asus motherboards over the years. From back in the Celeron 300 sandwich days to my current Z68 based board (in need of upgrade please pick me!!). I've owned about a dozen Asus boards over the past 20 years, and they're my go-to brand for any new build.

Price is no object - Cherry MX Brown Tenkeyless, backlit

If price is truly no object go with a custom Korean keyboard (KMAC, LZ, Duck, etc.) and a nice set of GMK/cherry doubleshots. You'd have to buy one second hand or buy a kit to put it together yourself, but they're arguably the best keyboard money can buy. If you're only interested in boards...

Leupold FC660C/EG Topre my thoughts so far.

Leopold does make 87key Topre boards. The Realforce boards sold on Elitekeyboards site are manufactured by Leopold. Windows Server Monitoring software?

Depends on how large the company is. There is the HP OpenView line of products: Network Node Manager i, and Operations Manager, and there is also OpNet, IBM's ITM suite, and many others. We use HP NNMi and Operations Manager for UNIX as well as a mix of OpNet for Application Performance...

Need a program to paste often used sentences..macro or something..any suggestions?

Get the portable version of AHK. No "installation" necessary. Put it in your documents folder and place it in startup or launch it to use it when you need it. I'm all for using the tools you have at your disposal without having to install additional software, but I also believe in using the...

    Windows 7 or 8

Having recently switched to Windows 8, I'd recommend it. I was using Win 7 Pro x64 prior and I think it's a great improvement. I don't miss the Start menu at all. I rarely used it to begin with, but then again I use my desktop a lot (messy). Edit: There was one slight concern with GPU...

    CM Storm Trigger vs. ???

If you don't need the macro keys or don't use them then I'd suggest getting something like a Rosewill RK-9100 or Ducky Zero Shine (if you're into backlights). If you don't care about backlights then try for the Monoprice Mechanical Keyboard The backlit keyboards are a little more expensive...

    Mechanical Keyboard Recommendation?

That's pretty confusing how they're doing the YOTS keyboard ordering. Apparently they're not fulfilling pre-orders for it. It's first come first serve. I suppose that's only fair. I'm looking forward to the Ducky Shine 3 - I think I have narrowed it down to this keyboard for my next board...

Same, I'm using a QFR as my main keyboard currently, but I'm waiting for the Corsair Vengeance K70 with Blues to come out. There are so many other keyboards that are super nice though. The Ducky Year of the Snake and the Shine 3 look pretty sweet.

    Corsair Vengeance K70 Review

I think the gunmetal grey looks pretty nice, but that's just me. I have black everything else as well. I'm still interested in getting the K70 with blues as I can't compromise on switch much. I want to give Browns a try, but I'm afraid I'll miss my clicky!!

Setting up new home network from scratch

Any reason why you're not just going wireless? Just curious. Yeah, gigabit is fun, but for most purposes (yes, even 1080p streaming) wireless is fine as long as you get some high quality wireless APs (think Cisco Aironet). You could save yourself a lot of dough on cables (and work!!). Guess I...
