If it's with text rather than raster images, then you may simply need to change the cleartype setting, such as setting it to greyscale and/or just flat-out disabling it. I find using the program "BetterClearTypeTuner" to be the easiest way to achieve all of this...

My suggestion for using DisplayID is purely because it can handle higher bandwidth, so if DisplayID resolutions work on the monitor(s), then maybe the GPU will be able to output higher total bandwidth and keep both monitors running at higher refresh rates.
Don't suppose you specifically tried using DisplayID custom resolutions inside of CRU rather than traditional custom resolutions?

What if you try making the custom resolution via CRU, making sure to add the necessary data blocks for "HDR static metadata" and "HDMI 2.x" (for VRR)?

It's my impression that BFI at 120Hz on the CX results in a given pixel being turned off for the same amount of time that it's turned on, meaning that the panel is already natively 240Hz.
So assuming that this is accurate, then going straight to 240Hz input seems like the more likely scenario.
