    Fastest (available/affordable) laptop memory

Thanks for the reading material, I hadn't thought to check the acronym. No. There is a difference in program load speed (the difference is between 'very fast' and 'negligible'). For my uses, it isn't that important, but the implications for lower spec computers is massive, so I'm continuing...

    Fastest (available/affordable) laptop memory

Ok thanks, why is the DRAM Frequency half of 1333? Is that because it's dual channel, or are the two numbers unrelated? Partially true. The boot time is because of the SSD, but the responsiveness is entirely credit to the RAM. The reason for this is because, upon boot, a 3GB partition is made...

    Fastest (available/affordable) laptop memory

So I went ahead and made the purchase (didn't see these posts until afterward). Ok WOW this computer is crazy fast. Boots my linux build in under 3 seconds. Loads every application instantly, and I have enough memory to run the entire operating system out of RAM (gotta love those 20GB/s...

    Fastest (available/affordable) laptop memory

Haha ok thanks, I just needed a bit of encouragement I think! :) It should absolutely fly with those specs. It was no slouch to begin with

    Fastest (available/affordable) laptop memory

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade the memory on my HP Pavilion G6 laptop (i5-2430M processor). It seems the best memory I can get for it is the Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz Plug N Play Hyperx Laptop Memory Kit CL11 1.5V. While I'm pretty confident with desktop building, I've never tried laptop...

    Perfecting Q6600 overclock

On a side note, the OC will have to wait for a few days. I was cleaning off old thermal paste from the CPU today and like a total idiot I managed to spill some white spirit on the mobo. I'm going to give it til the weekend to dry out and just hope that everything will be ok!

    Perfecting Q6600 overclock

It's not just an OSX observation. I throw around a lot of OSes on that machine from Windows through to obscure linux distros and have found for heavy use the weak point is always the processor over the RAM. OSX idles at around 200-400MB fully configured for me. Windows 7 at around 1,200-1,400MB.

    Perfecting Q6600 overclock

Strangely RAM doesn't seem to be taxed very hard, at least according to any kind of activity monitor I've tried. It seems to peak between 1-2 GB use

    Perfecting Q6600 overclock

Hi, thanks for the responses. The RAM I use is 2x2GB G.Skill 8500CL5D, rated at 1066Mhz. BIOS initally set it to 1.800V but I have since upped that to 2.1V as per the manufacturers recommendations. I will try as you suggested and knock the multiplier up at a lower bus speed, hopefully that...

    Perfecting Q6600 overclock

Hi all, I spent a few hours the other night attempting my first overclock on my Q6600 mounted on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P board with Arctic Cooler 7 fan. The computer is a hackintosh running OS X and I could get it to boot fine into OSX @ 3.6GHz but Prime95 would quickly result in workers stopping...

Abnormally low write speed with OCZ Vertex 2?

Thanks a lot for the link blurp, I have read through the thread and it is the exact problem I am having. I have created a 'trouble ticket' (?) with OCZ customer support. Since this is my system disc, it's going to be a total pain in the arse waiting for shipping, but at least OCZ is having the...

Abnormally low write speed with OCZ Vertex 2?

Hi, I bought a 3.5" 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD Drive with the hope of beefing up my read/write speeds. I use it as my OS disc, with a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard and RAID controller. Having installed it, CrystalDiskMark shows the write speeds to be incredibly low. Does anyone know why? Here's the...

    New mobo for Q6600

Thanks for your help Sabre-Flair. I dialled in a couple of the settings from that thread, and got it to boot @ 3.6Ghz easily with temps between 45-69C depending on load. However, I got BSOD on the intel burn test, so, as easy as it is for me to copy the settings into BIOS, I have no hope of...

    Unresponsive DVD drive

I bought a second hand dual layer DVD RW so that I could install Crysis (my old DVD drive didn't support dual layer). I plugged it in, let windows install a drive and it comes up under device manager as 'DVDRW SATA 20X20X12X ATA Device'. When I insert a disc however, it just spins and doesn't...

    New mobo for Q6600

I do plan on overclocking, although I will probably do so quite conservatively. I bought myself a copy of Crysis specifically for seeing how far I can push this PC, since none of the games I play at the moment are even mildly taxing it with everything maxed out. Since this is my first...

    New mobo for Q6600

OK so I've got everything up and running now. I've been running my games maxed out, and am AMAZED at how much better it performs then my old rig. I suppose that it is because of the massive leap from the nVidia 8600 GTS to the ATI HD 5770. One thing though - when I turn on the computer, it...

    New mobo for Q6600

Ok, so my simple attempt at upgrading the mobo has turned into a fairly comprehensive overhaul of the machine, due to 2 unforeseen problems: 1 - The Dell power supply being custom built for the case with leads far too short for the new mobo/case. I've bought a 550W PSU. 2 - My graphics card...

    New mobo for Q6600

Thanks for all the replies. As I said at the outset, I'm only a casual gamer, and I have found the system's performance to be not too shabby in that department. I imagine the weak point is the now totally-outdated nVidia 8600 GTS. If I follow moogs lead and clock the CPU higher, I doubt I'd have...

    New mobo for Q6600

Thanks for the answers. I think I've found a used EP45-UD3P that will do the trick, so I'll see what I can bag it for. I see magoo that you push your Q6600 to 3.25GHz, are the benefits noticeable? Is there much of a heat problem?

    New mobo for Q6600

Hey all, new user here. I'm a casual gamer and a very frequent photoshopper, working with some huge databases of pics, most of which exceeding 250mb each. I own an ageing Dell Dimension 9200 with standard specs save for new HDDs. I'm looking to upgrade so that I have room for expansion with...
