On my Geforce 8800GTS, this worked fine...I connect the video card to my TV via HDMI.
I connect my sound blaster X-fi to my TV via RCA cables. There's a splitter, and they go to my PC speakers as well. So I would have sound at my PC, and TV.

In my old driver, I could add the custom resolution of 1280 x 960
It would appear stretched, but I could also check "enable resolutions not exposed by the display" and delete my custom resolution of 1280 x 960 and then 1280 x 960 would still be in the list, treated as a non custom resolution...
