Battlefield 4 Beta Gameplay and Performance Preview

Nope it's windows 7. I had the same problem until I upgraded to windows 8. Same 680. Much better performance.

So what causes screen tearing, really?

Vsync on at all times here too. Being uber in multiplayer isn't a priority but I can't stand shredded images.

Semiaccurate says: "[Kepler] will win this round on just about every metric."

How long is "acceptable" between releases from the two companies though? It seems if they don't launch on the exact same day everyone goes bezerk. The 7970 isn't out two weeks yet and is in short supply. A bit too early to panic.

    Kepler in March/April?

No man, I don't know any more than you do. If I did why would I waste time speculating/arguing on a forum? :) I was just stating the obvious. There will be more info on Kepler in the next few weeks and it will spark far more interesting discussion and provide better context for the 7970...

Kepler IS Coming Q1 & FF Crystal Ball Stuff

There's no such thing as too racist....if you wanna play that game I say go all the way. Anyway, the chinese have been the source of a lot of accurate rumours in the past but also a lot of bullshit. The good stuff comes through cause a lot of the big AIB's package their cards over there. Early...

    Kepler in March/April?

No we have always agreed on that point. We just disagree on what's considered a top-end GPU release or full process migration. GTX 285's don't fit in that category in my book. In any case we've beaten this thread to death. It's all not going to matter in a few weeks anyway - there'll be a lot...

Kepler IS Coming Q1 & FF Crystal Ball Stuff

So Kepler is coming in February, March, April, May, June or December. Nice, we only have a few months left for random guesses!

    Kepler in March/April?

[H] tests only a few games in each review and has no convenient way of aggregating data from multiple reviews. I don't regard any one site as gospel and [H] certainly isn't at the top of that list. I read all sites' reviews and decide who's reliable based on their track record. As far as I know...

    Kepler in March/April?

@ICDP: Nope my original post was asking why people are so hyped for a 30% bump. All your subsequent beating around the bush was just to distract from the question :) Don't get me wrong. I'm not asking you not to be impressed. Just expressing my surprise at the whole thing. At least we agree on...

    Kepler in March/April?

@Viper-X, numbers are from TPU launch reviews for all cards in question. 1920x1200. That's pretty representative to me. You have a better site or settings that you consider more representative? And now we have clowns claiming its 60% faster, lol. Amusing.
  13. T

    Kepler in March/April?

@IDCP, are you arguing with yourself? When did I say the 7970 is a crap card. You should stick to numbers. My point stands - it's a lower increase than other architecture and process migrations hence my surprise at the hype. You can harp on the 480 all you want but it's funny that it was...
  14. T

    Kepler in March/April?

    Ok, let's try this with no interpretation, just raw numbers relative to each company's former generation. All numbers based on launch reviews at TPU, 1920x1200 resolution. 65nm -> 40nm: GTX 280 -> GTX 480 (+54%) GTX 280 -> GTX 580 (+79%) HD 4870 -> HD 5870 (+64%) 40nm -> 28nm HD 5870...

Because right now it's being evaluated in a vacuum with no 28nm competition.

    Kepler in March/April?

I have a feeling the 7970 will be viewed in a slightly different light soon.
  17. T

    Kepler in March/April?

I made no statements about the 580 being great or not great - that's all in your head. My original question was why people are so hyped over a 30% gain from 580->7970 and consider it par for the course. Or do you disagree that people are hyping up a 30% gain? Not really sure what point you're...

FUD: GTX 680 to release in Feb

I love chinese translations :) "Explosion of urine coming, everybody come on strong crowd"
  19. T

    Kepler in March/April?

What exactly is "irrelevant" about 1080p? Don't tell me you think Eyefinity resolutions are somehow more relevant - that would be a pretty bad joke. You can consider [H]'s methodolgy valid if you like. I will continue to use readings from sites with consistent methods that isolate GPU power...

    Kepler in March/April?

[H]ardOCP has one of the least scientific power consumption reporting methods out there. i.e. not useful for any sort of analysis. Use Xbit, Hardware.fr or Techpowerup for more accurate numbers.
  21. T

    Kepler in March/April?

Ah, but I'm not skipping anything. I agree that it's a big boost over the 5870, however it's not the 5870 that it's being compared to now is it? :) According to hardware.fr a 7970 draws about the same power as a 580 when clocked to 1100/1350 with powertune limitations removed. At those speeds...
  22. T

    Kepler in March/April?

You just have low expectations. The 580 is 70% faster than a 280. Why should we start thinking 30% improvements are spectacular? Personally, if the big boy Kepler isn't over 2x the speed of a 580 I'll be disappointed. As you said they fucked up perf/watt with Fermi so I'm inclined to believe...

There's no proof or confirmation on #2. That was all Charlie's guesswork.

    CES/Kepler

Nice to see at least one person around here has a clue. A few 7970's trickling into retail won't hurt sales of the 580 immediately. It's hard to believe I know but a lot of people have no idea what a 7970 is or that it was launched this week. 580 prices will come down eventually though as 7970...

    Kepler in March/April?

Depends on when Kepler gets here. If it's coming in 6+ months then yes it makes sense to ask top dollar now. If not, well.... Careful with cherrypicking. If you want to play that game you can find examples of cards in the past that were 300-400% faster than their predecessors.
  26. T

    Kepler in March/April?

Sure, that's the status quo. Now who's willing to bet Kepler doesn't improve perf/mm^2 relative to Fermi from an architectural standpoint, notwithstanding the move to 28nm? AMD would be silly to set 7970 pricing where it is today if they knew nVidia could match them at a lower price point so...
  27. T

    Kepler in March/April?

Well even if we compare within the same company.... X1950XT->2900XT: +17% 3870->4870: +100% 4890->5870: +44% 6970->7970: +40% The stock 7970 is not really impressive in terms of performance on a new architetcure and process. Don't understand why AMD was so conservative with default...

Iran Sentences Alleged Video Game Developer ‘Spy’ to Death

Yeah gotta agree, some pretty ignorant comments in this thread. There are valid reasons to visit "hostile" countries, especially in the case when your family is from that nation. There are a lot of mouth breathers who never left the street they grew up on so I guess that sorta thing is expected.
  34. T

    NVIDIA GK104 Coming Soon?

Where exactly is it written that the two companies have to release products in lock-step with each other? They have different schedules, budgets and priorities. If it makes you feel better you can pretend AMD is also 6 months late to nVidia's 6 month's late response.

Nvidia for GPGPU but ATI cheaper and better...

1GB cards do just fine at 1080p. I think getting a dirt cheap CUDA card separate from your gaming card is a good idea though. You might decide GPGPU isn't for you. The only problem is that low end cards are probably slower than your CPU due to the additional pcie transfer latency and the...
