Oh just to be clear i also work in IT "server side engineering and architecture" and have no intention of replacing my main system for a MAC.. Well not yet.. I had an opportunity to pick up a new rMBP 2013 cause i was inquisitive about it and wanted to see what all the hype was about.. sure...
Hello,
so i have been a PC guy since dos 3.x days and a medium level gamer.. "just built a new gaming box about a month ago "i7, 16 gig of memory, r9 280x etc"
over the years i have been curious about Macs but never bought one. I finally broke down and bought one a week ago rMBP 2013...
Howdy,
So right now i am using my dell 24in lcd Circa 04/05 time frame.
So as i am building my new gaming system i think its time to get something newer and bigger.
I know IPS is all the rage but i get this feeling is still new and needs a little more time to mature. I suppose i could...
Hello,
I have been kinda of out of the scene for a while but i have a old 8800gt OC and its on its last legs.
i am looking for something new to hold me over until i get my new system
I was looking at the FTW cards but i rather get something more mid range as i will be getting a new...
Hello,
Just wanted to add something if you plan on running vail remember the min spec for the HD has been increased to 160gig give or take a little.
So either pay now or pay later or get a cheap 250 gig laptop HD and swap out later when u get vail or SSD prices drop some.
Just my 2 cents
I recommend you check out Citrix xenserver.
Its free, its really fast, and its not as picky with hardware as VMware. "you do need Cpu visualization though"
At the end of the day you can try a few different hypervisor's and choose which one makes the most sense for your needs.
I do...
I second using stock HSF,
i still have mine kicking around if need be.
doubt it will come to that as i don't ever see needing more than 4 gig of memory on this file server.
For the most part i think the core i3 is the way to go, the SM MB is amazing and its worth the RMA if you get the wrong version.. IF you want custom power cables go to frozen cpu and save yourself time, money and frustration trying to make your own.
Since its not totally off the ground i wish...
They never really said..
I have to assume the case was bent in shipping as i sent the sas boards back and then they requested the case.
When i was running into issues the first night i did see some of the sata connectors were just not lining up correctly.
I may have torqued the case...
hey just wanted to post a quick update.
I just got my new case from Norco "since i had to rma my old one"
Almost done with the reinstall but i did make time to test out most of the hd bays.
They work like a champ with no issues what so ever.
So props to Norco for standing behind...
Oh hey,
Forgot to mention this.
Not sure if its new info or not but the dual power connectors in the norco cases are redundant and you only need to wire 1 side as per the folks at norco.
So Norco wants my case back and they will ship me a new replacement.
Not really on the top of my list since everything got installed cabled etc.
But they have been really good about everything and willing to work with me..
So 2 thumbs up to norco for standing behind their product and...
hmm..
maybe i spoke to soon..
i think my norco got dropped in shipment.
Upon installing the drives they did not seem to go in all the easy.
Trying to close the drive shut it 2 locations actually bent the sata connect at almost a 90 degree angle and one of the connectors fell off...
So i finally Slip streamed the drivers into the install and its now up and running,
I did get an error about an inf missing off the c drive so i will prob do the install again and see if it clears up.
either way it looks like i am golden for the build/parts and everything else.
i guess...
I cannot say either way... I know the board required it and i had no other choice.
In the end i did and do no feel its worth the money to run a Xeon class chip in just about any home based application.
so i went with the I3 to save money and heat.
if you need the Xeon for something...
I sent them an email and followed up the next day with a phone call.
My yahoo based email ended up in the spam bin..
either way i called em, told em what i wanted, showed em pics of cavdivers, and a pic of the sas boards for molex lay out. done.
Phone call / order was less than 5...
So my i finally got a hold of a laptop HD since i did not want to mess with mounting a 3.5 inch drive in the system and did not want to waste a hotswap bay for the OS.
anyways i spent more time with the MB and i need to say so far the SM mb exceeded all expectations, lots of options, lots of...
I would recommend you do some trolling on the forums.
took me almost 2 months of research before i had every question answered before i did my build
i also went though 4+ revisions of hardware before i got what i felt was the best build at the time.
You can see some of the chatter and build...
58 bucks priority shipped.
If i had to do em again i would get em a tad longer on the bottom side..
Other then that way worth it imho.
Cannot stress enough how hard they were for me.. i gotta give mad props to cavediver on making his..
Hello,
yes i have posted the box.. you can see that with the 2 screen shots in the 1 post where i have a pic of the post and in the bios.
Yes that is version 1.02 of the Super Micro X8SIL-F
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182211&Tpk=X8SIL-F
When i got the MB...
naw.
They are custom made cables from frozencpu.com
they had various colors. I told them what ever since they where out of black at the time of my order.
As i mentioned for me I really struggled with the cables. I talked to cavediver along the way getting tips and tricks but still the...
Hopefully i don't get nailed for a double post but here it is in all its glory.
Right now i am using a tray for my Os, Will likely get a 2.5 in hd and move the os to it before i am done with it.
Hey Guys,
sorry for such a late reply,
I have been sick and having some major issues trying to make custom power cables so i ended up buying a pair from frozen cpu... They cost over 50 ish bucks shipped but after dealing with the crap trying to build my own it's well worth the money...
update.
So SM was out of MB's so i have to wait until Monday so they can restock and ship out my rma MB
also for some off reason provantage decided to send my sas and reverse sas cables from Ca ;ito Oh so then can ship them to AZ.. I dont ask why other then what a waste and i will not get...
so i got my MB in today.
I got pcb v 1.01.
I opened a RMA with Super Micro and they will cross ship me a new 1.02 mb nextweek.
Iike i said i don't mind waiting since i dont even have all the parts and pieces yet as they are being shipped and not worth me spending a ton more money on a...
as per ewiz they seem to have the 1.02 board.
Mfr Part Number: X8SIL-F-O VER 1.02 PCB
and i called kingston and double checked the memory and said it was compatible.
so i can only do so much.
worse case if it does not work i can either return the memory or rma the board for the right...
I do transcoding on a core 2 duo and on my media center with a amd 5050e with 0 issues.
The i3 530 is next gen and also has HT which actually works. This chip will be completely fine for whs and transcodeing.. It would even work for encoding as well.. would not be as fast as a quad core or i7...
Hey,
I have been looking at a home server for almost 2 + months now.
Here is a parts list of what i am buying in the next day or 2 and from where i can get the best price / shipping included etc.
I think this is fairly close to what you would want to buy.
I have 9x 1TB green drives...

Motherboard: GA-MA790GPT-UD3H

Howdy,
i am looking to build a new WHS and i am having trouble selecting a MB with DDR 3. I dont exactly see windows 2003 drivers for them but it appears the xp drives should look fine.
i plan on adding in 2x of the supermicro 8 port jbod cards and maybe a intel gig nic depeding on the...

Hello,
I know I am coming to the party a little late but let me give you my perspective since i work with virtualized stuff all day long and run my own virtualized lab at home.
