I bought a pair of 681B's for my dad because I couldn't stand seeing him with crappy headphones all the time. They were like 20-25 euro's or something. Coupled with my old soundcard I gave him they sound really great for the price. Little dark, but dark in a nice way.

STX indeed seems overkill for those speakers.. Unless you're going to be buying a pair of >=mid-fi headphones in the future I wouldn't bother getting an expensive sound card. Most definately, it's not just a totally different audio device you would be using, but the good DAC and amplification the Sound Blaster Z has can't be used at all, since the D/A conversion has to take place in the headset itsself, which usually has vastly inferior D/A conversion than a good...

cpu usage is not going to tell you much about how it bottlenecks, my 4.8Ghz 3770k is always at 25% when I'm playing games (1 out of 4 cores fully used (singlethreaded game))

AKG K550 is a closed headphone that seems to sound a lot like an open one, some even prefer it over the K701. It's a circumaural model and it's pretty large. I haven't heard it myself but this is just what I've read about it, you might want to give it a try

Probably not much benefit in amping those kind of headphones You're way better off getting a sound card with a decent amount of output power, such as the Titanium HD or the Essence STX (I'd stay away from the Phoebus or Recon3D) The Essence STX... Sounds a bit brighter than the HD Uses Dolby...
