a lot of turbulence comes off the tips of the fan blades, and a divider would keep the turbulence from each fan seperate

most people who mount them on top just use extra long bolts to extend them out an external box or enclosure is a different animal

is it uglier? yes. is it easier to damage? yes. are the fans on it going to be louder? yes. with creative methods inside mounting works great.
