Silverstone throws its hat in the ring for a Steambox style mITX case

RVZ01:

Questions:

1. Will there be a fortress version?
2. What are the intakes fans, and are they filtered?
3. When can i buy it?

I really hope they make a FTZ01 or something. I applaud them for trying out the slimline layout but the aesthetics still need work.

I wonder what happened to the watercooling capability, they showed it off on the earlier prototype but I see no mention of it now.

yeah kind of old news. it looks huge compared to the m1 :p

Personally, I'm more concerned with how terrible it looks than anything else. If they made this with some of the standard aluminum stylings of their regular cases, I'd be in in a second.

Its a huge case comparing to a SteamBox

How big is the steam box? I mine its deep enough for 770,780. It uses an ITX mobo. This guy is probably a little taller and a little wider since it has to be more tolerant of options. But realistically looking at how tight this is and similarities in configuration there isn't a whole lot the Steambox could cut out.

The RV is regular case series. I mean if you want to be really picky about it SS has a lot less Aluminum case than they have Steel/Plastic. People just think of the TJ series and some of their media center PC's when they think SS.

It's got too many HDD bays. You only need one, and it doesn't have a front IR connection. And it's plastic.

The Valve box is 7.1L (305mm x 315mm x 74mm), so half the volume of the Silverstone.

I'm pretty sure that in the "Small Form Factor Systems" forum, we think of their Sugo line, which all of the models but three use aluminum front plates.

Moreover, I have no problem with plastic in general, if it's done right. The problem is that a form factor like this is designed for a living room or component rack. There's little reason otherwise to use this case.

This would look terrible in a living room. The sharp beveled edges and all the lines and ridges just look chintzy. I'd take a squared off plastic box over this any day. Just make the front flat and it's instantly so much nicer looking.

That being said, there aren't exactly many options in this form factor, so depending on cost, I might be stuck with it anyway.

I agree on this personally, but my guess would be that there's just extra space because of the design, so it probably just made more sense to use it for more drives if necessary.

Again it's an RV not an SG. It's fitting with the style of that series. Even the cleaner FT systems (which has shared platforms with the RV) use a mix of aluminum, steel, and plastics depending on use case.

This a good sign though. Between this and the FT03-mini and the move to mATX for the latest SG's that Silverstone is going to start moving the platform into their other lines and styles and not just using the crux of one style (SG) as the "itx line".

Sure. But it's Silverstone who decided to make it an RV case. They could have just as easily decided at the onset to not make it part of that horrible looking line of cases.

Or maybe they decided that the RV line and its fans deserved a decent sff option.

Well, the Raven line is intended to appeal to gamers, so it makes some sense to do a Steam Machine-like case in that style.

The plastic isn't the problem. If it means it's a few bucks cheaper to manufacturer, i'm fine with plastic. It's just incredibly ugly, like a dog puked all over the case.

My thoughts exactly. Like Lo Wang said, "Lady someone beat you with ugly stick."

Its not aimed at you then. Its an RV case, which has always been there biggest gaming series, fitting for it to get the first steambox competitor/DIY platform.

How many times are you going to say "its an RV case" as an excuse before you realize that nobody gives a shit and its ugly?

I like the idea but wish it looked like belonged in the living room instead of this plastic disaster

I am saying because it's not about it being ugly. If it was a take on a old line or them making a new one it would be one thing. But this isn't an entertainment set piece. It's a chasis for the DYI to make their own "Steambox" using a design close to the Steambox. It isn't an HTPC case. It isn't a stream box. It's a gaming box. Silverstone has a gaming line. That line is the Raven. So they made a Raven case, for Raven fans looking to make a Steambox.

So it would be like a someone going into a thread for the next Fortress box and calling it a boring, stale, characterless case. Ragging it because you don't like the looks is pointless because it wasn't ever meant for you. Just like a FT wouldn't be a fit for an RV fan. Different target, different tastes, and different type of people.

It's like with movie reviewers giving a movie a bad rating because they don't understand Sci-Fi.

Its not that bad. I think its more the details that throw it off. Front ports and slim bay not as much as the Raven logo and the side/top panel fan. If it could stand (not with RV logo) it would look very solid.
Besides I would like to see a picture in comparison how small it is.

Maximum PC Magazine just received a RVZ01 pre-production sample. They had an interesting shot of it next to other current micro towers. Personally I think the RVZ01 looks quite good with a more reserved styling relative to other "gaming" oriented design while maintaining a little bit of flare. Alienware X51 has the smallest case because it uses an external power brick.

I wouldn't say it has no style, but this particular style evidently doesn't appeal to a good amount of people.

Personally I'd want something the size of the X51 or Steam Machine prototype, with the style of either the SG05 or SG08/10.

It's a shame, because internally it looks to be near perfect for me. Seriously, just square off and flatten the sides (and in a perfect world for me, add in IR receiver with internal USB header) and it'd be an entirely different story.

Too big, too much plastic. I wouldn't mind picking up one of the cases Valve is using for those Steam Machines though.

i'm liking the cooling a lot!

only thing i really want with a fortress version is NO optical drive.

that or a FT03-mini v2 with no optical drive.

None of them have enough USB ports on the front. You need 4: 2 for wireless games pads, and another 2 for a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Not everyone needs usb in the front, if you need them/need more you could grab a usb hub.

Interesting that you mention that on this case as well as my own. It seems inaccurate. For the sake of others I'll copy my response from my worklog to the same comment:

Thanks Quartz! 2 USB ports seem to be totally sufficient. In fact, I'm only using 1 of the 2 for a Logitech keyboard/mouse. I have 4 wireless Xbox360 controllers (for Mario Kart 64) sync'd to an internally mounted Xbox360 wireless receiver (internal motherboard USB header). 4 USB ports on such a case and application might be a little overkill. 2 USB3.0 ports seems to plenty and keeps the front panel clean and simple :)
