Dark Souls is on Steam

yeah I hate to be a lazy piece of shit (which I am), but I was hoping for whatever is considered a good starter guide. I've seen the wiki, my problem is that it's so much info and I'm really just after the high points. No problem if a quick starter guide/video isn't available, I'll piece it together with the wiki.

Yea, there are some good starter guides. I'll whip something up a bit later.

you don't want much information, the discovery process is what makes this game fascinating. just don't use anything that you don't know what it is, and do not put any points into resistance.

Dark Souls Cafe opening in Japan

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/12/11/dark-souls-cafe-opening-in-japan

The food and drinks are all straight from Lordran. The drinks menu offers Soul Arrow, Estus Flasks and Fireball, and the food includes Serpent Soldier meat and Mushroom Parent meat, Arm of Black Dragon Kalameet, alongside other things that I can't translate ("black dream bun"? Not sure.) There's a special menu throughout January, too, including Heal Miracle drinks and Knight of Sunlight pasta, just like Knight Solaire would eat.

Yeah...I just need to put on my big boy pants and get out of that first area. I killed the first mini-boss knight guy, but couldn't manage the guy at the bottom of the first tower area (the one with the big hammer). I just need to get past the first main boss on the bridge and I think it'll pull me back in.

Sounds like Havel. Before I knew how to play, I'd cheese him to death with soul arrow, bow/crossbow, etc. and hit & run tactics. The dude will chase you all the way up the tower, but never leave it. So I'd hit him once to aggro him, then run all the way to the top, turn around, then fire away as he turns his back to walk down the tower again. It'd take about 15 minutes, but so rewarding as a nub. ;)

LOL - "kill the dogs first."

If anything, I'd add in "Don't forget that your attacks while falling do huge damage"

It's been months since I've played. I stopped after losing to Nito for the 10th time. I do want to finish this game before the 2nd comes out, though.

that's one of the many cool things I love about this game...every person has a unique experience in terms of which bosses they find to be difficult...I found Nito pretty easy but Ornstein/Smough and Manus to be crazy hard...for every boss you will find varying opinions on their difficulty

Nito, the Bed of Chaos, and Manus were my toughest fights. I never have managed to kill Kalameet although I only discovered him for the first time on NG+. Supposedly in the first pass he's a little more beatable.

I think most people will agree on Kalameet. Doing it solo is brutal. I found it quite a bit harder than O&S, even on regular NG.

I always found Kalameet to be middle of the road difficult...in NG I can take him down pretty easily...you just need to be patient and don't get in that extra shot...he's strange because some of his move sets are not easily telegraphed so when you think he's going to do one thing he does another

I don't have the patience for 15 minute boss battles, it seems. :p
Even fights like O&S only take me 2-3 minutes tops. Manus is about 2 minutes. Gaping Dragon about 5 just due to the encounter design. Sif is about a minute.

I'm with you on the shorter boss fights. The longer something goes in DS, the more chances you give something to instantly kill you.

Usually one of the breath attacks get me. Sometimes the dive swoop if he gives mixed signals on the telegraph.

What is the problem with nito?

maximum pyro (+5 asc, bellowing dragon crest ring, great fireballs + fireballs) can take him out really fast. my strategy on SL1 (through NG+7) is run right to beside the stalagmites, the skellies will turn the corner individually. you can take them out with a divine weapon. after they are gone just keep your distance, lob fireballs then use the curve of the stalagmites to block his attacks. easy mode.

Alright, I know this is a non sequitur, but I'm going to try to get back into Dark Souls. I played it for six hours and never passed the first big boss (the one on the bridge), I got fed up with the controls so I stopped playing. I could see why people enjoy the combat, but the boss battles just felt cheap as opposed to difficult (if there is any distinction to be made there). I'm going to take another stab (har) at it!

Bridge... bridge......

OH!
Taurus Demon?
Super easy. On the way there you should have picked up something that can give your weapon an elemental augment.

The hint here is, Lightning.

Another hint, don't move when the battle starts.
Let him come to you. Th giant skeletons will never agro this way.

that never works for me because those giant poison spikes come up from the ground if you don't move...you need to move to the middle of the arena and wait for Nito

The Gravelord Sword summon? Where the sword's come up from the ground?
I swear you can block that with a shield....

I never tried blocking the spikes with a shield...I assumed since they were coming up from the ground that you couldn't block them and the game wanted you to move...either way Nito is pretty simple if you have a Divine weapon to take care of the early skeletons and any other strong weapon to deal with Nito himself

Yeah, try it out next time.
I vaguely remember, but that's cus i hit the bar after work today :)
Divine weap is great for those skeles...

the spike appearances are random, you just heal when they happen. I think maybe you can time the scream and roll but have not been consistently successful at it

A magic resist shield will reduce the Nito spike damage but not the knockdown effect. The silver knight spear from the Anor Londo silver knights is better than the club if you can get it to drop (it also does divine damage, but all physical instead of split phys/mag which is why it's better). Its heavy sweep attack will clear an entire mob in one swipe, plus you can defend while attacking with a spear.

Just finished the Smough and Ornstein battle, wasn't to bad once i decided to take out Ornstein first.. it was really hard if i took out Smough first.

did this while only using 12 estus flasks and my iato.. first time play through and absolutely loving Dark Souls.

i'm down in new londo and i learned the hardway what the Ring of Astoria is for :)

I was tinkering with Nito on NG+++... I'll be damned if I don't need to practice. I haven't played regularly in a few months and he completely wrecked me, even knowing the tricks. I guess my reaction time is needing work.

I always kill Ornstein first as well...super Smough is easy because you can just circle around the pillars while using them as a barrier...I also prefer to use Solaire in that fight otherwise the battle goes on for 20+ minutes...they're both always on top of me and it's hard to get any good shots in...with Solaire he can distract Smough and I can focus on Ornstein

I need a new game to play now that I finished Assassin's Creed: Black Flag...finished Fallout 3 recently so I'll probably knock out New Vegas

Fuck yes, found more new screenshots of Dark Souls II

Neat screens (I see the legs in the last one). I'm amped as hell for DSII. I've taken my character in DSI about as far as it can go. I've just replaced my Crest Shield with the Cleansing Greatshield. Since I at SL155 now I'm sitting on about 2050 health so the fact it doesn't block 100% physical damage isn't dramatic so I've pretty much got my answer to the oolacile dark spells as far as my build goes. I spent a few hours tonight PVPing and didn't lose a a single match as most of my opponents don't seem to be able to adapt to a fast tank :)

I had one guy pop Power Within and then spam EVERYTHING magic/faith/pyro at me. Blocked the fire with my Black Knight shield, blocked the magic with my Cleansing Greatshield, dodged the telegraphed stuff. He got desperate at the end and tried to punch me to death with his talisman, and that didn't work out so well as PW killed him while I was still at about 65% health.

Had another guy try to bleed me... if any of you remember my 1000+ bleed resist screenshot you can guess how that went for him :p

Good times, can't wait for the hijinx in DSII. :)

Yeah, my hype for this is at an amazing level I don't think I have reached before.
Look at that shitty graphics! Ugly grass, low res textures, low geometry everywhere.... But that atmosphere...that world...the battles......... bandaras.gif
(those shots are the PS3 version)

In to my veins please....
don't forget the other arm

Late-comer to this game. Bought this at least half a year ago during the Steam sale and never played it until I read about Dark Souls 2 coming out. Even have a copy of Demon's Souls on my shelf for the ps3 that I set up a character for and never touched.

In the past week and a half I've already put in 20 hours into this game. (As a father of three with a full time job, this is actually an amazing feat)

Now I can see why it gets rave reviews!! I remember there being a thread a few years ago on [H] about how mind-numbingly difficult Demon's Souls is. That's probably one of the reasons I was so hesitant to start this game in the first place. There is a bare minimum of hand holding and you have to figure everything out yourself. I've already spent an hour and a half reading gamefaq's on this game and I still feel like I comprehend only about 30% of the mechanics in this game.

My character is already in the 30's based off level, but I'm pretty sure I leveled him completely wrong. I picked a Wanderer class and ended up taking his DEX to 24 before any of the attributes were even above 12. Now it costs 6k souls to level up and my END and health is only about 14. Not to mention that I have not upped any of the wisdom, int, or faith categories. I currently use a tower shield and a drake sword and knight armor, most items to +5.

Despite feeling completely in the dark about what I am doing, I am still having a blast. The average playtime on that one game playtimes compilation website says 60 hours. I feel like I won't even finish this game in 60 hours.

Thanks for the assurance!

What stats would you suggest I start pumping into? Endurance and hit points? I have yet to use magic at this point.

What would you like to do with the character? You don't need to put points into anything if you don't want to.

Since you already went DEX, I'd say break up leveling between endurance and dexterity, with a point into vitality every fifth level. This will be a standard dexterity melee character. Don't put more than 40 points into any of them. Nothing fancy, but a strong base.
