I have a ZFS based NAS built around a norco 4020 case. I'm looking to expand my storage, and rather than build a second server i'm looking at going with a sas expander. I know chenbro makes a sas expander, but i've also seen that hp makes one.

The big issue with this card is that it seems to be powered by the pci-e bus (it doesn't need anything else from the bus and infact, the other pins go nowhere)
does anyone know of a pci-e adapter that just provides power?
or has anyone had any luck making their own adapter? It seems silly to connect a motherboard just to power a slot....i can always go with the chenbro option but i've heard a lot of good things about the hp chip.
Thanks in advance.
