Haven't upgraded in quite a while, coming from a 4.9GHz Ivy, but damn! 5800X3D is a very nice upgrade. The 5800X is also a decent upgrade, but I returned it and got the 5800X3D. Does well running with cheap Teamgroup DDR4.

Running a niche train simulator (TANE) in a CPU bound benchmark:
0.1% min went from 41FPS -> 53FPS -> 68FPS going from [email protected] -> 5800X stock -> 5800X3D stock
Avg went from 64FPS -> 94FPS -> 126FPS

Just damn! I never thought I would see that crappy program run that well. Nice improvement in FSX as well.

On AM4, works well with an old school 1080TI SLI setup ($380 from ebay for the pair). Last hurra for AM4 and SLI driving a 4K display at 3080TI performance.

BTW, I also ordered this from Amazon for $289.99 and got the cell phone lens (look at the one star reviews). First time in 20 years+ of ordering stuff on-line to get scammed that bad. Blessing in disguise, found the MC deal a day later.

How much better real world game performance is seen over a 5800x? Is it worth it

From what I've seen the biggest difference is in minimum performance/frame rate in most games. Some games have a considerable boost at 1080-1440p average frame rates, but it's usually at 120+ FPS anyways, so I personally don't think that's meaningful.

So unless you play in VR or don't upgrade every year or two, I don't see a reason to upgrade from a 5800X or spend much more for this.

I just impulse bought one of these 5800X3Ds for $260 NIB in FSFT to replace my 2700X and haven't installed it yet to try it out 😅.

You need to do it now! that thing will destroy the 2700x OMG! And here I am considering going from a 5600 non X to the 5800x3d

I'm rocking an I7 4770. Hope there is a difference.
For what I cared about, Haswell wasn't going to do squat coming from a 3570K capable of 4.9G all core. I was doubt full about anything Intel given what I know about TANE.

Figured a change of architecture may make a difference and tried a 5800X and mobo from MC figuring that if I didn't get anything, I'd take it all back. 5800x hands down blew Ivy out of the water. 5800X3D even more - 100% improvement in average frame rate in TANE.

I had both the 5800X and 5800X3D for a week. I also tested FS2004, FSX, and Prepar3d. In each case, Ivy was blown away and the 5800X3D never did worse than the 5800X. The 5800X3D beat the 5800X in those flight sims when settings like traffic were turned up. The 5800X3D never performed worse than the 5800X in these sims for me.

There are lots of benchmarks published for more mainstream stuff. It is well known that the 5800X3D excels in FS2020. It is also well known YMMV, but sometimes the 5800X3D punches *way* above its weight class.

If one is currently deciding between 5800X and 5800X3D I feel if one chooses the 5800X one will always wonder what the 5800X3D would do - that's what pushed me to do it and it is only $80 more.

For those with an existing 5800X setup, the decision is more difficult without data. But a 5800X3D will drop into the same mobo/memory as lessor parts, so it is an easy upgrade in that sense.
