What's a good NAS software?

I'm done with FreeNAS/TrueNAS, it/they suck unwashed ass. As much as I want zfs, it just isn't worth the grief. I need something functional and user friendly enough to be workable, not some geeky BS that only club members can decipher.

You've piqued my interest for this since I own a Synology NAS. Having that run on an old desktop would be great.
