USB-c vs Thunderbold 3

Hi!

I’m looking at a monitor which has a Thunderbold 3 input. Now has my laptop a usb-c output (with DisplayPort 1.2 function), but without Thunderbold. Is it still possible to connect the laptop by these ports? So from the usb-c output of the laptop to the Thunderbold 3 input of the monitor? Or is this completely different?
 
What monitor? Most likely it will work fine, as most monitors use alt DisplayPort for video out, but there are a few that wrap the video in thunderbolt 3.
