I have 4 usb 3.0 ports up front, but only one motherboard header.
Has anyone tried the y splitter they make for the board header, and
if so, did it work? I have a pci card that I could use, but I would much
rather get the 3.0 ports working without having to use it.

You can't really "split" USB in the same sense as a fan splitter where it's just wiring. A USB Y splitter cable can drive one port or the other at any given time, but not both. You either need an add-in USB card, or some sort of internal USB hub.

What case you rocking?

Cooler Master c700m. They also have the c700p black

edition also, but that thing is ugly as crap to me.

I've never tried the usb 3.0 splitter. If they made a hub it could work but dividing the signal, I don't know.

if you have a USB 3.1 port you can get an adapter to change it out to the 30 pin usb 3.0 port, a lot of people don't recognize this port so maybe you'll get lucky?

if not, you can also relegate two of those four ports to USB 2.0 speeds ala https://www.amazon.com/Cablecc-Reversible-Housing-Motherboard-Adapter/dp/B0816C3ZV6

I did this using that same exact cable and it worked perfectly. This also has the added benefit of allowing you to use ALL 4 ports at once, not just one set or the other....

OTOH, if your mobo has USB 2 connector, you could use that too, albeit with slightly lower performance...

or as you stated, use a pcie card to get the other 2 ports connected & working at USB 3 speeds...
