Upgrading from 8700K to 12600K worth it?

Currently running an overclocked 8700K (4.9ghz) with a 1080Ti mainly used for 1080p gaming. Was thinking of passing the 8700K down to my son, as his system needs an upgrade and this would give me an excuse to upgrade.

Would a 12600K provide much of a boost compared to the overclocked 8700K?

IMO no. But it depends on what you need it for. I do have a 5820, 8700 and now a 12900. The 12900 is a worthy upgrade over my 5820. But not over the 8700. But again, depends on your wants/needs.

nope.. waste of money :D

Now, if you were upgrading your son's computer anyway, why not... but a better option might be just picking up another 8700k cheap..

Since this is mostly about helping your son I would say it's a fine move, but if you're only going for a 12600K I would recommend waiting for cheaper B660 boards to pair it with.

If you're going to do that, why not get an i5-10400 while they're cheap. All you have to do is make sure you find a good board.

sure, whatever works. My point is to keep the 8700k it still rocks, and do whatever is cheap to upgrade son's machine.

More money to buy silver with :p people are all over wasting money on overpriced trucks and computer hardware as if the dollar is not spiraling out of control.
