SSD write slows to a crawl

I have a 128GB Samsung PM800 SSD. Read is perfectly fine. When I try to write to it however it transfers fine for around awhile but inevitably slows to a crawl (like a few kb) before picking up speed again for a bit and slowing. Was using this in OSX so I thought it might be an OSX issue but testing in a Windows computer shows the same behavior.

edit: here are the HDTune results. Can see the drop offs pretty clearly.

What firmware version does that SSD have on it? If I recall correctly initial shipments of that SSD didn't have TRIM enabled firmware and had to have updated firmware installed on them by the end user.

I would make sure the latest firmware is installed on the drive, then do a secure erase (HDDErase 3.3 works great for this), and then see if the writes improve.
 
The drive is empty. It is more or less new, never really used it in my laptop and thought I would put it to some use in my desktop. I will try the HDDErase.
