new build - the basics

Hello:

Its time for a new build after 6yrs with a trusty ol' i7 4790k/Win7. It's also time
for a little cheer-me-up.

So, after perusing my fav online shop, I've come up with the following as the basis
of the new build. I'm hoping someone can offer a thumbs up/down or other options
I should consider. Not a gamer at all -- but I do need/want a fast and responsive pc.

Intel Core i7-9700K Coffee Lake 8-Core 3.6 GHz (4.9 GHz Turbo) LGA 1151 (300 Series)

ASUS TUF Z390-Plus Gaming (Wi-Fi) LGA 1151 (300 Series)

Any reason why you chose a i7-9700k + Z390 instead of something more recent? Also, why an overclockable CPU?

32 GB is a lot or RAM, unless you have some app/workflow that actually requires it. Also, you probably won't see much benefit from DDR4-3600 over 3200, so there's no reason to pay extra for it.

850 W is way too much PSU for that setup. A 400 W model is more than sufficient for a system without a GPU.

What are your storage plans?
 
Not sure your budget so knowing that could change things. Agree with BlueLineSwinger on the overclockable processor. And LGA1151 socket is EOL for Intel.

LGA 1200 would offer an upgrade path for later. For now maybe an i7 10700 processor (c.$350) which adds more threads than the 9700 for productivity. Believe the 10700 also includes a heatsink cooler which the 9700K does not. Same graphics on each processor.

TUF Gaming H470-PRO WiFi MB can be had for around $150.

And as mentioned, with no GPU being used, PSU wattage can be dropped down.

I was only looking at the i7-9700k because it was prominently displayed at the 'Egg' and comments were recent.

The latest 10700 is the 10700K and the 10700KA. The KA is newer but I don't see an actual difference
between the two besides the packaging. They are priced identically. Neither have thermal solutions (which is fine).

I knew 32Gb of ram was alot -- I'm sure 16Gb will be more than enough for me. Also DDR4-3200 sounds to be
enough as well.

The TUF Gaming H470-PRO WiFi MB looks perfect -- and it has no freakin' RGB. :D

I appreciate the solid advice on the PSU and will tone down the wattage.

For storage I have a Samsung 860EVO 500g for boot only and 4 internal HDDs for data. The HDDs will just get
transfered over. The Samsung might as well -- but I've noticed the M.2 alternative and would consider that if there is a
real world advantage.

My budget is $2000 CAN which translates to about $1525 US.

I've zeroed in on the Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2 case. Love the easily accessible dust filters.
