Does anybody know of an internal USB hub that does not use a pcie slot?

My mini-itx motherboard has only one 19pin USB 3.0 header, and the single pcie slot is occupied with a gpu; I would like to get a usb 3.0 card reader, but then I couldn't use the ports on the front of the case (unless I used one of those usb 3.0 cable-through-the-back-of-the-case things...which isn't very good looking, imho). :/

Your help would be much appreciated.

No, can't find one now (weird, because I kept seeing them yesterday), they had a type-A USB connector that'd go out through the back of the case and connect to one of the rear USB ports.

Can you just split a USB header like that? I was under the impression that each one was limited to two ports, and if you wanted more you needed a hub/controller of some sort.

Right, maybe. Do you often have both ports on the front of the case occupied? Maybe if you only use 2 devices at a time from than header it would work? I see a lot of back and forth on what I'm looking at.

What Mobo and case do you have?

Case: NZXT H230
MB: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XN-WIFI

I like being able to connect my phone to the front. Usually have my mouse connected there too, so I can easily move it between my PC and ps3, though that's not as important. Then there's the rare occasion when I need to connect a flash drive, but I can always disconnect something else for that.

...mostly, just don't like the idea of having nonfunctional ports on my case.

silly question time, but define: "Card reader", what kinds of cards do you want to use? Unless it's a UHS-II SDXC card than you won't need a 3.0 card reader.

SD cards will probably be the most used. I only have have a Class 10 SDHC card right now, but I don't see any harm in future-proofing (especially if the difference in price would be $10 or less).

I had (and I'm still) strongly considered going with something like that SY-HUB50044...it's definitly an option.

For anyone more adventurous than I, this is also an option:

Just get this and set it to the side of the case, plug it into the rear panel. I have one and it's great.

Actually, could stick a magnet or double-sided tape on the bottom and attach it to the case. Only issue would be the black cable standing out against the white case, I'd think.

No, that is not what he means

I know exactly, it has the 2x USB 3.0 plugs to plug in the back of your motherboard and then the 19 pin header on the other end, A lot of us with X58 rigs need these to utilize the front panel USB 3.0 on newer cases...you literally loop it back into the case
