How to unlock LHR cards?

EDIT: Solved! Check out post #52.

Anyone have a guide? I googled but I can't seem to find anything useful.
Most people write that newer miners like lolminer do it automatically, but I'm getting about 53-56mh/s on my MSI 3080 Gaming Z Trio, with vram set to +1300 and 75% power.
I heard you can get 70mh/s. How?

It should basically be automatic at this point and fairly stable. I'm using trex miner on mine and get a stable 64-66MH/s. Overclocks are:

Core: -200MHz
Memory: 1700 (half that if windows)
100% fan speed
245W power limit

You could probably do better with the overclocks but I haven't repadded these ones yet and want to keep temps down.

What app do you use to overclock? T-rex is showing 203W consumption regardless of how much I move the power slider in MSI Afterburner.

I'm using hiveos so I do my overclocking there. In windows I thought maybe afterburner would work, it works for my nvidia laptops. Try not messing with the power limit slider and adjusting the clock offsets maybe?

Is there any chance you are just adjusting the slider in afterburner without ever hitting apply?

Of course I'm pressing apply ;)

I have tried lolminer, nbminer, t-rex, nicehash, it's pretty much between 52-58mh/s.
Nicehash is at 52mh/s, nbminer about 58mh/s, the other two in between.

I would be happy if I got about 65-70mh/s, my old 2080Ti was mining 60mh/s at 150w...
I know what I was buying, but I was expecting more compared to 2080Ti, at least nicehash calculator was showing a higher income.

I'm mining Ravencoin atm. Seems to be hashing more than what whattomine is predicting (42 vs 39), so I guess I'll keep at it.
I used have a rather nice little mining rig back in the days, some 4 years ago, with 13 1060 and one 1080Ti. Now I want to do some casual Nicehash mining lol, but not at 53 mh/s. And I'd rather mine ETH than some random altcoin.
Not new to mining, but now it's just become more of a mess. Now I know why this guy paid €960 for my 2080Ti :D

Sorry, I posted that from my phone while doing something else and there's a lot of 'n00b' posts in this subforum lately since it shows up high in search engine results when people search 'mining forum' or similar. I missed your post count / join date / etc. due to that and thought it may be one of those, so that's my bad. FWIW though on some versions of Afterburner I've actually been sitting there wondering why my fan curve didn't take due to the way it formats at certain resolutions, etc. and the apply button isn't always super obvious. If you run GPU-Z does the sensors tab show what you would expect as far as your clock speed, etc. based on your settings in Afterburner? The T-Rex version is the newest version direct from their Github or you're getting it through Nicehash?

I downloaded T-Rex, lolminer and NBminer through Github. When it comes to Nicehash I just used the same I had before with my 2080Ti.
The clocks are showing correctly. But I might ditch Afterburner and get something else. The power slider in Afterburner doesn't go further than 103%. Maybe my card is gimped?

I downloaded Ravencoin wallet, generated incoming adress, mined to it the whole night and got zero coins. I must have done something wrong, lol. Right now mining on Nicehash at 55mh/s and 170w with their "high" preset. Vram is at 86-88c (186F - 190F).
My electricity is actually pretty expensive at $0.21/kwh so I don't really want to run it this low. Whattomine is showing 3080 LHR at 70mh/s.

I'm not sure if just pulling out my old 2080Ti and putting in 3080 messed up the drivers somehow. I did not do a clean driver install. Figured it's the same driver for all RTX Nvidia cards.
I'll have to do some more research.

Nothing wrong with your power limit - that's normal for high factory overclock cards.

Have you tried lowering you memory over clock a little bit? Gddr6x is ecc, so if you go too high it doesn't necessarily crash, but results in lower performance.

Not sure about nicehash but some pools have payout limits of around 100 coins and it'd take you probably a few days to reach that with 1 x 3080.

I agree 1300 migjt ne pushing your ram too hard. Have you checked memory JT? You migjt be throttling.

Memory JT? Can't find that, is it the same as hotspot?
It's hashing about 51mh/s on Nicehash, temps are gpu 56c (133F), vram 86c (190F) and hotspot 73c (163F).

I am using T-Rex miner and it's automatic. I guess. It takes me from 66 to 71. An increase, sure, but it didn't isn't "getting past" the LHR when FE cards can do 100.

It pisses me off that a lot of people claim "I hash 75mh/s on my 3080 LHR" but almost no one is giving any tips.

I followed this guide:

And now I'm hashing at 60-61mh/s with 200w power draw on Nicehash with NBminer. This is exactly same hashrate as my 2080Ti except 50w higher power draw.
I like Nicehash because it's simple, it shows all the information needed and pays me in Bitcoin which I easy can send to localbitcoins and then convert into money within a minute.
However it's still far from the 70mh/s I aim for. I'm not sure how to increase the power draw. Something is fishy, and I might format my HDD and start from scratch.
Is it Windows 11? Latest Nvidia drivers (490-something)? Micron vram?

Anyway, I'm going to come to a conclusion to either having a shitty card or getting to my 70+mh/s target and I'll share the tips.

I have no tips to give. I run my card at +150 core +1200 memory 80% power and let T-Rex do their algorithm for LHR. Sits at 71.

Well that's a tip, but I'm still getting 55mh/s on the newest T-Rex miner, at 205w and the same oc settins as you.
For some reason T-Rex says target hashrate for unlocker is between 53-55mh/s.

This is still lower than 60-61mh/s on Nicehash + NBminer.
For some reason power slider in MSI Afterburner does nothing for me between 60-102%. If I go lower than that then yeah, the wattage drops, but it's just hovering between 190-210w regardless if I set the power slider to 60% or 100%.
Currently the best settings I have found for Nicehash + NBminer is -502mhz gpu, +1500mhz vram, 60% power, 65% fanspeed (makes it inaudible).

What's your vram? Samsung or Micron?
I remember having Micron vram on my old mining rig with 1060 and those hashed much lower than Samsung.

The power draw slider is weird.
Setting it to 49% makes the board draw 108w. Setting it to 50% sets the draw to 185w. That's silly.
Setting it to 60% the board jumps to 220w for a split second then goes down to 200w but it fluctuates between 200-220w.
Anything after that does nothing whatsoever.

I tried:
Downgrading drivers (clean install).
Uninstalled MSI Afterburner and tried with EVGA Precision - same problem.
I will format my hdd on the weekend and report back. Got too much stuff going on atm.

Install hiveos to a USB drive and boot into that. It's free for up to a few GPU rigs and would be a quick way to check.

[Edit:] My 3080 LHR memory is micron. Not sure if there are others yet although I heard some of the other models were getting hynix now. If it's fluctuating like that do you think it could be the memory getting too hot? I'd only run a memory overclock like that on a 3080 if I had redone the thermal pads and had a good cooling setup.

I can't see a windows reinstall doing anything. And I don't know the type of ram chips. I set it and forget it.

I haven't seen any 3080's in the 50's for eth, so something is up.

I could try HiveOS to troubleshoot but it's not something I want to do regulary as I need my Windows PC to be up all the time (it's a Plex server).
Funny I bought 3080 LHR to do mostly mining and some gaming, and I've done 5min gaming since I've got it on Monday, hahaha

Well something definitely is up with that power slider. But I also ripped out 2080Ti and put in 3080 without changing anything to the system, software or hardware.

It's a bit suspicious that 3080 after tweaking is mining almost exactly as much as 2080Ti was (60-61mh/s).
I don't think I'll be doing much right now with this. I got some photos to edit and perhaps do a clean install to Windows 10 on Thursday or Friday. A quick google search shows that Windows reinstall fixed the power slider issue for some.
Also, I might try flashing Suprim X LHR bios on my Gaming Z Trio LHR.

I'll post an update on how it goes.
Meanwhile any suggestions are welcome :)

You might just be overthinking things if it's getting 61MH/s. LHR unlocks are far from a guarantee. The first few weeks at least after the first unlocks were released I tried them but some GPUs would be unstable, others had to be run well below the ideal unlock %, and then you have the typical silicon lottery stuff as well where one GPU gets 5MH/s more than another at lower power draw. Things have gotten a lot better across the board with LHR unlocks but I still wouldn't bet on getting exactly 70% out of a GPU. Think of that as more of a theoretical max that you might reach but aren't going to on all cards.

Not sure on windows, but on linux if you set a power limit and the GPU isn't maxed out against that it can be a sign of memory thermal throttling or something similar. I don't do much nvidia overclocking on windows but with AMD it's better to unlock advanced settings and set a specific MHz/Wattage setting instead of using the basic % sliders so you can be more consistent.

I am getting 74Mh -200/+1500/75% using NBMiner. For the other miners, I was getting less, around 68-70.

Should definitely do a DDU run before reinstalling windows. That's a pretty dumb reason to reinstall the entire OS.

Mine has been running the whole night at +1500 vram, but I've seen temp fluctuating between 96c and 104c (205F - 219F).
If others hit 70-74mh/s, then me being at 60 is not a bad silicon lottery.

I don't mind reinstalling Windows from time to time. It's like using detox, gets rid of everything bad :D
It's why I keep pretty much everything on separate HDDs.

My card is running at 71 and still only about 80C on memory. And that memory is between 1100-1200, depending on if I want failed shares or not.

Windows reinstall did not help.
Power limit in MSI Afterburner still does nothing. Now I don't know what to do, but maybe flash Suprim X bios. I just need to find LHR bios.

What range are you looking for on the power limit?

I run 75 or 80, but some people around here run 55. Are you looking for something way off base?

I'm looking to actually get power slider to do something above 50%. My card is not drawing more than 200w while mining and I've read that 3080 LHR mines 70-73mh/s at 250w.
It's always 200w regardless if the power slider is 50% or the max, 102%.
There must be a lock somewhere and I assume it's that 200w lock that gets me stuck at 60-61mh/s.

Getting 83mh/s on 3080Ti LHR using NBMiner (Use NBMiner! Latest). This is for ETH.

Power limit settings is most likely one of the triggers looked at for LHR. Try this, use MSI AB, this is what I do:
  • Set power limit to zero (Edit: meaning don't touch it, leave it at default, you will be controlling power of the card via the volt/freq curve below)
  • Memory between 600mhz+-1000mhz+ -> Memory too high seems to trigger it and some in betweens -> you may have to experiment to see how LHR behaves
  • Use MSI afterburner curve:
    • Fix the voltage and frequency to around 1100mhz -> experiment here too
      • Click on the lowest or most left dot on curve so one dot is highlighted
      • Control + L to lock voltage and frequency to that dot (MSI AB shortcuts listed below )
        • You will see a vertical line through that dot indicating the fixed volt/frequency
        • Edit: Your GPU voltage and frequency should be constant no matter the load after this after you apply it
          • Don't forget after editing the curve you still have to apply the change
      • You will be controlling power by locking the voltage and frequency, power limit setting will become pointless, recommend leaving it at 0
  • You can raise the frequency at the low voltage selected on the curve by:
    • Select a dot on curve and Shift + Left Click (hold the left mouse button) and drag up to increase frequency or down to lower. For me anything over 1100mhz gpu does nothing but increase power usage. This will move the curve up or down for clarification.
I also set a fixed fan speed for the GPU, to minimize temperature transients, either set a custom fan curve or fixed fan speed to keep DDR6x cool, I like it less than 95c and normally I am around 90c both on the 3090 and 3080Ti

MSI Volt/Freq curve shortcuts:
CTRL - F: open the voltage curve menu
CTRL - L: lock voltage and frequency to the highlighted dot
Tab / Shift-Tab: select next/previous dot
CTRL - UP / CTRL - DOWN: increase/decrease the frequency of the selected dot by 10 (it would be 1 without ctrl)
And shift + left click in space can select multiple dot, really useful when undervolting,
shift + left click on dot can move the entire curve,
ctrl + left click on dot can create a more gradually increase curve.
Control + L on main Afterburner (not in oc scanner) page locks the user profiles.
Select dot + Shift + Drag for whole curve movement

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks a bunch, lots of new information, but unfortunately it did not solve the problem.
I believe I did it correctly as core frequency was set to curve, and I experimented a few different vram settings between 600-1000mhz.
Also, I could not set power limit to zero. I can't go lower to 27%.

I really want to try Suprim X BIOS, but I can't find the LHR version.
Annoying because I could've gotten liquid cooled Asus Strix 6900XTXH for €300 more, which mines 65mh/s (at 50w less) and has like 20-25% better gaming performance (and I have a Freesync monitor).

For clarification set power limit to default, not negative or positive from stock in other words don't touch it. Core frequency should be set constant, does not change even at idle, for example always indicating 1100mhz or whatever value you set. If it is fluctuating then you did not lock it to the point selected. Voltage and GPU Frequency should be constant no matter the load. I do not know if AIBs have variations to LHR cards behavior different from Nvidia standards, I would suspect not but not sure. Thanks for the feedback.

I edited the process of locking in freq/volt on steps above.

Can't seem to set constant gpu frequency.
When it's locked in the curve it seems to stay at one frequency (1335), but if I press apply it just resets back to original. If I don't press apply the frequency starts to fluctuate as soon as I start mining (it fluctuates even if I press apply).
I have checked "unlock voltage control", "unlock voltage monitoring" and "force constant voltage" in options.

I followed this 2 minute guide:

Anyway, I found Suprim X bios that's apparently working:
https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/does-anyone-have-3080-suprim-x-lhr-bios.3730120/
The guy who made the thread has the same card and has the same problem, and flashing worked.
It's just that I'm defragmenting one of my hdds atm and can't restart the computer to flash the bios :-/

Great video, looks like you do not need to press control + L, that works as well but just L will also lock the frequency/voltage. Just tried it. Unless your bios is somewhat funky :( and forces GPU to follow the curve.

I am currently get around 81mh/s~ on a 3080ti with +1000mem -500 core at 70% That video helped me bump it up from 62mh/s~

I think I just might give up and mine at 61mh/s at 200w because I tried to flash the card and connecting to iGPU just forced my computer into restart mode or no video signal BS.
I might look at it in the future, but right now I got more important things to do.

I mucked around today with myn3080lhr card and the new nbminer. 63 is the max it will do. Better than 55ish or so it was doing before.

People are getting into the 70s but nothing i do gets it above 63
