GPU Prices dropping?

Demand greatly exceeds supply, People capitalize on that and bot /scalp a large chunk of the supply at massive price hikes. The suppliers have done little to prevent this , or have continued to fail if they are trying, and so the consumer base is frustrated and angry. I get that. From AMD/Nvidia 's point of view everything being made is selling instantly and its not a bad place to be. If this costs sales or customers down the road that remains to be seen. At the end of the day its all a shit show and maybe its the Dad in me but I'm not mad.. I'm disappointed.

To everyone who is truly upset about not being able to get the new hotness.. Don't be. Just sit it out and find something else to do while it plays out. Its not worth your time, energy and certainly your mental health.
Right, one of the things driving continued markups is Fear Of Missing Out: if you can't have exactly what you want, you settle for whatever you can buy, then treat it as some mysterious myrrh-covered substance only suited for bartering your way up-the chain. Just look at assholes on our own fs/ft forum only doing trades with parts they never needed:

They can wait weeks to hook idiots on Ebay for 2x msrp, (while they skate around the "no scalping" rules here by ONLY offering trades for other mythical things). Either way, they get what they want (either a trade, or enough money to buy exactly what they wanted through someone-else's markup) while sitting on new inventory for a month , further driving price! They can't possibly lose money on their purchase (only their time)!

When you were already planning on spending the money, you can definitely afford buying-in

Eh...I traded a couple things for other things. I don't really feel like an asshole for doing it and both sides got what they wanted.

That still does not address my point. Neither AMD or Nvidia are ensuring that they sell directly to gamers, which they could. And so it's being bought by a scalper - gamer or not, the speculative re-selling makes them a scalper - who then resells it at a massive profit extracted from the following client - whether that's a gamer or not. Either way, you bought your card indirectly, and at a massively inflated price. Nothing wrong with that, but it confirms the point I made earlier. AMD/Nvidia are leaving gamers to hang dry, when they could prioritize some of that stock for gamers by selling directly to them, since it's going to sell for the same monetary gain for them anyway.

If you want cards sold only to gamers I suggest you check linus tech tips, they are selling cards directly to proven gamers, not sure though when they will get some again.

+1 to this post. Instead of being a hobby or a pastime, it seems like a grim pursuit of an impossible goal.

I'm not a gamer. I'm a photographer. It cheese me off that I'm still using an 8 year old card, when Adobe is increasing the use of GPUs in their photo software. But still ...

And wait and see the coming GPU wave that happens if/when Ethereum mining becomes less to non-existently profitable (potentially as early as July). Everyone will be able to buy used mining cards for cheap on the secondary market, and Nvidia and AMD are going to shit their pants when demand craters.
We can only hope.

And how do you do that, precisely?

This. I got a Vision 3080 - didn't fit with my res, so I traded for an XC Ultra instead (which does). I've been trying to trade a couple of lower-end cards for higher, based on new needs - and because I've got a friend with a dying 2000 series that I'm trying to help him replace (and he streams, so he needs the horsepower). Sometimes you get what you can get, and see if someone who has what you need is willing to swap. Swapped a 6800XT Hybrid for an air-cooled one because the res wouldn't fit in the 011 Dynamic XL with the other coolers I had. If I could find a different 3080 or 3090, I'd scoop it up to see if I could trade for one that has a block on it (since right now, I'm terrified of trying to block my existing one - might not be possible to get another if something goes wrong - and I do need one more card).

AMD sells directly to consumers via AMD.com. But how would you propose selling directly to 'gamers'? *snip*

I would say EVGA probably does the best thing with their trade-up program.
I’m surprised you failed to see my point when you yourself re-articulated it. Amd and Nvidia could do the same thing EVGA is doing with their queue notify list. The big difference: EVGA is not motivated to sell GPUs at MSRP because they can charge much more and get away with it. Amd/Nvidia don’t make any more money from chips sold to AIBs despite the latter making a killing on sales this past year, so it’s all the same to them: they could sell at MSRP, make the same money they’re making now, and get the additional benefit that if most gamers just queue for MSRP cards for the manufacturer, AIBs would be forced to not raise prices so obscenely. Side benefit: you beat scalpers by limiting 1 card per household.

Go ahead, find the fault with that method. Tell me the business scenario in which this solution is not viable. I’ll be waiting. Ps: I’m not whining for a new card, I don’t care if I stay on my 1060 for another 2 years. All I’m saying is there are legitimate ways to avoid the current situation.

This is so ridiculous I ended buying a gaming laptop with the RTX 3000 series because that seems like the only way I was going to get anything at this point. This is honestly nonsense.

Then everyone would queue for cards to scalp them. You think scalpers won't wait in line too, or have a way around the one-per-household rule? A line doesn't make someone a gamer - it just makes them someone that will wait in line. Plenty of EVGA cards hitting hte scalp lists too!

You're also not considering that AMD/Nvidia may not have the manufacturing to make that many actual cards (very different than the GPUs just being shipped to AIBs for integration into something), which would reduce supply more, and could potentially drive some of the AIBs out of business (see what happened with BFG in the past, as an example), which reduces supply potentially even more (current chip shortage aside, many times in the past it's been limited by what cards you could even build).

Then everyone would queue for cards to scalp them.
Sure thing, that's possible. But since it's the source of the GPUs that it'd be selling directly, at least you'd make it harder than having scalpers and miners buy in bulk from AIBs, like we know has been happening. I never said this would fix the whole situation, but it sure as heck would make it a bit better for gamers. I have little hope of ever getting my 3060 12GB Black, since EVGA will be prioritizing their $389 model much more than their $329 one.

Fellas...fellas...fellas, don't make it personal.
I too sold my GTX1080Ti Duke edition three weeks before RTX3080 was announced.
I waited for 6800XT when it was announced.
I currently don't own either...despite saving the funds to purchase at launch time.
I pulled out an old GTX770 4GB variant...that is what I've been using since that time.
It is a hell of a step down from that 1080Ti but I will wait and so should you.
I've got other hobbies...but even if I did not, I'd do it simply on principal.

Given the sellers I see generally flipping the cards, most get one or two- not much in bulk out there. They’re just using bots and the like. Which blows, but it’s not like they’re sitting down across from EVGA and buying 50 at a time.

It's (mostly) just speculation. Nobody really knows but possibly the distributors as far as who is getting how many of what.

I don't really see an issue with getting something of value and trading for something of value especially during this GPU and console bot frenzy. Lots of people want one or the other or even both, but can't get a single item. If by chance someone gets itemA and wants itemB and someone wants to trade seems like a win for both people.

It's not like had you decided not to order that the item likely wouldn't have gone to a bot anyway.

I do understand and see your point though.

Say I want a 3080 and can only get a 3070, well damn right I'm gonna grab the 3070 and just maybe someone will want to trade for whatever reason. Maybe it was more than they needed or they wanted some money back because it was overkill or etc. There's tons of valid reasons to settle for something or to buy up to the next model.

So where do you find these bots? Maybe I should use one, just so I can get the 3060 I'm seeking.

Given the markup on 3060s vs other cards, number of eBay sales, and steam survey statistics it appears the 3070 is easier to get a hold of and probably 3060 ti most elusive. Markup is around 2x for 3070 and 3090 and 2.5 to 3x on 3060s, 3060 tis, and 3080. That’s being driven by demand and quantity shipped. System builders appear to have some stock of 3070s on hand lately.

Quantities of rx 6700 xts shipped (or really any AMD card) seem to be a complete joke as well.

So if you went through the trouble to buy, make or subscribe to a bot you’d probably have better luck with something with better availability.

From what I've seen, the ones that work are insanely expensive. Was thinking of going that route and getting a bot just to get myself a card at MSRP, but to actually get into that scene is a whole big thing in itself. I've been trying to get a PS5 for almost 6 months. The scalping scene sucks.

OK so I'll "settle" for a 3070. Still insanely priced these days.

The 3080 shortage is just caused by a number of factors, but the rest of the lineup really should have been mass-market by now; I's because folks like you buy multiple lower-end cards from these drops, and then sit on them for Extortion Money.

I mean, if you think these"Buy it Now prices have always been this fucking high, you've got a few brain cells loose:

https://www.ebay.com/p/10040743932

The price has risen since the rest of the lineup was released, Because folks like youi are buying multiple cards to sit-on, all in an attempt to hit that ultimate goal, Thanks to your FOMO, you;re depriving the GPU market of any chance to meet mainstream demand.

During the last Mining Rush, cards topped-out at 2x markup, so the only possible source for this jump up to 3x is People like you killing availability, while chasing those ever-increasing priced 3080!

I mean, just look at the 5600 xt and 5800 xt both are nearly as complicated to build as a GPU, but we have had those available at MSRP since February; the high-end parts will continu to be hard to find, but the low-end stuff has reached market saturation!

If I want a 3080 I’ll grab a 3070 if I can. If I want a 3070 I’ll grab a 3080 if available. I don’t think you understand what FOMO means. I won’t buy a brand or model line I don’t want. I don’t want gigabyte so I won’t buy any gigabyte models. You’ve got well known forum members here buying whatever they can get for trade. If I get a 3080 instead of a 3070 I wanted that frees up the 3070 I wanted.

People like you make me want to start sitting on products for extortion money though. For every reason you think what you do there’s a valid reason to step down or up. It’s not so cut and dry like you believe it is. To me it appears you have the FOMO. I have a card and am using it and you may or may not, maybe can’t get one and fear you never will or etc. You can rest assured it’s not because of “people like me”.

Nvidia has totally lost control of this situation, they are better served using all their GPUs in-house to mine ethereum, stop selling them altogether, best thing for Nv shareholders (of which I am sadly not one...), look at Microstrategy a has been BI firm riding the crypto wave highs or the biggest market manipulator of them all Musk/TSLA..
