Guessing unplug it from the pc ? Is there any other way ?

Thanks.

Want to try unraid but do not want to over write any of my important drives in the process.

K, what you need are proper backups taken every couple hours or daily or something.

Why would your data get over written? By what or who?

That's the good way; you can probably get away with removing data or power, but I'd do both just to make sure nothing weird happens. The other way is to purposefully wipe (or destroy) the drives, so it's not an accident.

Set exclusive write permissions to a different user? Haven't tried it but have read that technique used for some scenarios.

You can always use volume shadow copies. Turn up the max number in the registry and you can have versioned backups going back over 2 years.
