I actually have quite a bit of experience with this combination of CPU and motherboard. I've also used it on the X299 Prime Edition 30, which is functionally a nicer version of the same motherboard. Unfortunately, I can't really see what your settings are. You can also use the F12 "print screen" key to save BIOS images to a flash drive rather than shooting photos of them. That's much easier and shows everything I'd want to see.

What clock speed are you trying to reach? What are your voltage settings? How is the CPU being cooled? It took a monster custom water cooling loop to take our test 10980XE to 4.8GHz and keep it stable. If you aren't using a custom cooling loop, you can pretty much forget 4.7GHz on most chips and 4.8GHz+ is right out.

What we are dealing with here are unrealistic expectations. You will never be able to sustain a 4.7GHz+ overclock with a 280mm AIO on that CPU. It just isn't going to happen. You are talking about a CPU that pulls over 500w by itself when overclocked that high. On an open air test bench using a 10980XE and the same cooler you have, we saw that CPU hit temps of 96c. In an actual case, it would likely be far worse. At 4.8GHz using a 480mm radiator and custom water cooling that same CPU can still hit 109c.

Hell, even several 360mm AIO's can't handle that CPU. The one we got from Intel actually clocks higher than most 10980XE's do. If you get one that's not as good as ours you might not see 4.7GHz at 96c. We actually caused a Hyper 212 to fail using that same CPU. Frankly, you aren't likely to get anything about 4.5GHz or 4.6GHz out of a 10980XE without custom water cooling.

People underestimate just how difficult it is to cool that CPU. A high end 360mm AIO is the bare minimum you should use for one. The cooler you have is one of the better AIO's being a 280mm. You wouldn't get a lot by going to a 360mm. Even if you did, I'm not sure what to recommend. I use custom water cooling almost exclusively these days. I don't keep up with AIO's or air coolers.
 
I'll throw my experience in, here, with mine (see sig). I use the Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer II 420, which is the biggest baddest AIO you can get at 420mm. I'm still tweaking my every day all-core turbos (4.4 GHz seems doable), but AVX is where my load is most of the time. My CPU uses 350 watts at 3.6 GHz AVX-512, and the hottest core is high 80s C in a cool room.

You are trying to do 4.7 GHz AVX/AVX-512 speeds. You can't do that without extreme cooling (if at all). It's probably why you are crashing. Aside from lowering your all core turbo target, you need to set AVX offset values to lower those speeds.

If you keep that cooler, I would start with an offset that gives you AVX of 3.5 GHz and AVX-512 of 3 GHz. Then increase by 100 MHz until it gets too hot or crashes and lower it back to a stable value.

which is better? rads are equal. the z73 has slight better fans, the ryu has a better coverage block. id go with the ryu. or the 420 mentioned by Greb, if you can find one or go custom.
 
After reviewing the CPU in question and having a lot of experience with it, I'd say go with a custom loop. That CPU really needs to hit 4.6GHz+ to be worth while compared to other options like the 3950X / 5950X. Memory bandwidth and PCIe lane advantages not withstanding. Obviously, the thing is a no brainer if you need AVX 512, but then clocks are probably not your first priority. Power draw on that CPU (full system, with idle GPU) was 617w. About 500w of that was the CPU alone. That's doable by some of the upper end AIO's, but just barely. And as others have said, if AVX workloads are required its going to be even worse. I think I had to use a negative offset of 3 at 4.7GHz with AVX. Or it might have been 2 at 4.7GHz and 3 at 4.8GHz. I can't recall off hand.

I haven't a clue. Again, I don't use either AIO's or air coolers myself. All of my testing is done with custom water cooling loops.
 
Before switching cooler you could try some settings from the silicon lottery binning service and see which is your baseline for your current cooler. I've not used the 10980 so can't say much about cpu ratio - voltage.

Upgrading cooler is not going to help if your CPU is not stable, try the other 2 middle ones I think they should be alright with your cooler. Prime Deluxe II is a fine motherboard so there should be no issue there.
 
Sepe, What are your load temperatures at the 4.3/4.0/3.8 setting? You can use CoreTemp to get the readings in Windows if you need.
 
I had two different 10980xe's. Good chips. Got to 4.4ghz all core, but with a voltage increase. I used a 280mm AIO from BeQuiet. It ran hot 45-50 C idle and 75-80 under full load. Ran a little cooler at 4.2ghz. 40c idle and 70 full load.
 
Probably would be able to use intel XTU and individually overclock/overvolt a few cores to get better performance in low threaded tasks without overheating.

That's how I get my 6950x to 4.7ghz on my 2 best cores anyway.

I would say you are VRM and Watercooling limited to achive your desired state. 4.7ghz could cause 105degree C all core

Im running a 7820X @ 5ghz 1.317 and am using 360+280 with Noctua industrial fans.

The ASUS Prime X299 Deluxe II is perfectly capable of pushing a Core i9-10980XE to 4.8GHz if your CPU and cooling can handle it. Simply put, you aren't pushing enough voltage to take that CPU higher. 1.1v isn't enough. You need between 1.2 and 1.3v. 4.3GHz all core probably isn't worth running over stock (for most workloads) given that it can boost some cores past that on its own.

Not at all. The VRM's on that motherboard can handle it. Functionally, its almost identical to the X299 Prime Edition 30. Although the latter has an active fan embedded in the MOSFET cooler, so its a little better there. It's also much more expensive. His CPU cooler could potentially handle 4.7GHz, we tested the same cooler at TheFPSReview on that same CPU and were able to do it at 4.7GHz, albeit just barely. It's a 280mm solution if I am not mistaken. Unlike the custom loop solution, you have to be pretty aggressive with your fans to achieve that. You are right though, 4.7GHz ran at about 105c in my testing. I was able to achieve 4.8GHz at around the same temperature but I went with overkill on the radiators to get that.

I could actually get the thing to POST upwards of 5.1-5.2GHz. But it would throttle or BSOD almost instantly if you gave it any serious multithreaded workload. Even on custom water I couldn't keep it cool enough.

Being that I received the CPU from Intel, it was very likely a cherry picked sample. The CPU I got was better than the vast majority of CPU's that went to other reviewers and better than most of the retail CPU's I've ever heard of. If the Silicon Lottery data is anything to go by, the CPU we got for review is better than the top 16% of CPU's listed there. Ours would do [email protected] or [email protected] depending on cooling.

I still do not understand your post all that well, so let's hope I can answer your questions and provide clarity on this situation.

Changing BIOS versions is not going to make a huge difference if any when it comes to overclocking. One thing you have to be aware of is that the result I achieved was done using a CPU that Intel cherry picked for reviews. The vast majority of 10980XE's are not going to be capable of achieving what our test CPU can. Another thing you have to do is use an AVX offset. Most of the time, you'll need an AVX offset of at least -2 (default is -3) compared to whatever your SSE all core overclocks are. Your motherboard and your BIOS are not the problem. I've achieved 4.7GHz on both a Prime X299 Deluxe II and the X299 Prime Edition 30. You have to be prepared for the possibility that your CPU doesn't overclock that well. According to the chart posted earlier, (according to Silicon Lottery) only 38% of all Core i9 10980XE CPU's can achieve a stable overclock of 4.5GHz on all cores. This means you have a 38% chance of achieving a 4.5GHz all core clock speed. You have only a 16% chance of getting to 4.6GHz. Getting to 4.7GHz or higher is even less likely. Most reviews I saw on these didn't break 4.6GHz either, so you can bet that your chances of hitting 4.7GHz are going to be virtually non-existent.

That's one reason why I didn't buy one of these for personal use. I'd never have gotten lucky enough to get another CPU like the one Intel sent us for review.

Again, I wouldn't expect 4.7GHz. You should also use an AVX offset if at least -2.

As for the cooler failing, I'd need to know the idle and load temps. The BIOS doesn't fail in the way you are thinking. If it did, the system wouldn't boot at all.

I'd also like to know if you are using four or eight memory modules. RAM is not normally a problem, but your BSODs may not have anything to do with the CPU. Manually setting memory voltages is usually pretty normal, even if you are using XMP. If also like to know what modules they are. You might also want to lower your RAM speed and get your CPU overclock dialed in and then start increasing RAM frequencies.
