I currently have

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 Ohm​

Sound BlasterX External USB G5

I only game on this computer, and I was wondering if I would get better sound & positioning with

What do you plug the DAC into ? (sound card or is a DAC seen as an audio card itself ?)

either will drive them better but idk about the positioning part.
those are essentially the same thing, internal vs external and yes the usb is its own sound device.
the SB does have setting specifically to enhance game sounds though...

The G5 is considerably newer than the Z series and it's external. If you want to go internal, look at the newer AE-5. The Z series is almost 10yrs old.

You also wouldn't be getting much of an upgrade from that other external AMP/DAC. It would likely sound different than the G5, but "better"... erhm maybe? It will be way less feature rich than your G5 (No SBX for virtual surround sound, No active noise cancellation on the mic input, No EAX support for older games etc etc etc)

I have the same cans (DT770) but in 32ohm version. They work well with my Dayton Audio HTA50BT (though the amp is not really "audiophile" quality, it does perform well enough) and I can drive some decent Klipsch bookshelf speakers when the headphones aren't plugged in.
