3080 on the way - should I upgrade this memory? Question

I've got an EVGA 3080 XC Ultra on the way and currently running an 8700K on a Z390 board with 32gb 3000mhz CL15. Would it be worth it to go to 3600 CL18 or will the gains I get from the extra 600mhz be negated by the higher latency? I've been poking around but can't find anything on that specific scenario with an Intel platform.

Yeah the higher latency will largely cancel out the higher frequency in most games.
3000\15=200
3600\18=200
So final latency will be much the same which is what benefits games most and you will just gain a little bandwidth.
You should be able to get a larger gain by tweaking the sub timings on your current RAM than upgrading to a low latency kit like that.

You would need something like two of these kits to make a decent difference and while your CPU\MB may not handle 4400 it should tighten up nicely if you take the time to tweak it.

Before you go spending any money see how it runs with the new GPU first as you may find you are getting plenty of FPS and not playing any really CPU heavy games like Fallout 76 or ARMA III that will drop under 60FPS due to a CPU bottlneck on there old engines.

Anything 3000+ At Cl16 or lower you’re not likely to notice a substantial difference in Gaming. Technically you could get a few extra frames with a high end kit but a 3600 CL18 is not a huge improvement from your current, its a lateral upgrade.

As dasa noted the final latency is what matters most for gaming, which is the same for 3000/Cl15 vs 3600/Cl18.

That all said start with the more important question what monitor are you using/what resolution?

Then with a 3080 that shouldn't be an issue for most games, as noted 3-5fps would be your rough gain if you bought some much faster ram (but you'd likely have to pay 2x the price to get said faster ram).
I was looking at a 2x8gb 4000 CL15 kit and its $200 , I think I'm going to settle on a 3600 CL16 with 1-1-1 timing for $140 (I have 3200 CL16 currently but I want RGB :) )
