Backup around here means a Synology NAS running redundant drives. Running on a UPS / power conditioner. Fast, all our machines can get to it....really like it. A couple files (encrypted password database) get put on SSD's every few months, and tossed in the desk.....just in case.

I play lots of different games, but my wife and I have HOURS of LAN play with UT2003 and UT3. Capture the flag, and 'Greed' games. We laugh, swear, yell at the bots....just really have a great time. Can't tell you how many hours of laughs and good times we've had with those two.

FWIW, I'm with Comcast / Xfinity, and I'm running my own hardware; a Motorola MB8600 modem, and a TP link AX1800 router / wi-fi hub. PC's and NAS are hardwired, and the rest of the house flies WiFi. Zero regrets; just checked, I'm getting 948+ down, and 42+ going up on my main PC. Happy here...

Not an unusual failure mode in solid state electronics. Burn in is supposed to capture 'infant mortality' but it happens. Seeing silicon fail after a short time in operation isn't unheard of.

I've been pretty happy with DuckDuckGo. Run a few identical searches on it and Google.....you'll see. May not be perfect, but it's pretty darn good.

My home NAS solution has 2 WD 'Red' drives in it, in RAID0. So far, so good..... Agree with MrGuvernment....putting a big drive in your computer isn't really a 'backup'. I've got a Synology NAS box, not expensive, very happy with it.

Might look at the Noctua NH-U9S. Just put one in my AMD build, really working out well. Only 125mm tall. Depends on how slim your slimline case is..... Another one that should fit is the Noctua NH-L9i....

In the FWIW department, I built a 5700G system using on board graphics for my office....and I love it. Seems very fast and solid. Will be using it for doing some audio processing and circuit simulation / schematic capture. And COD....;-)

We buy extra as possible, but SMT parts have a shelf life in terms of solder ability. You can bake IC's to some degree, not very practical with 0402 and 0201 parts. Its a lousy situation, all the way.

... it's not just chips that are in short supply. Stupid passive parts like SMT resistors and capacitors are brutal to find in production quantities. One power supply part we use was typically purchased for $0.28, and our commodity people found a few thousand....for $37.00 each. I'm not kidding...

I really appreciate the suggestion. Seems obvious, but I can't imagine the failure mechanism with the Noctua....and I run Noctua's in all the machines here, and like them a lot. I was careful taking the OEM HS off, let it run for a while to get it warm, came off without any violence. CPU...

Seems obvious....haven't tried it yet. But I will. I cannot imagine why and how the HS could cause this issue.......kinda like changing your tail light bulbs and having the transmission fall out.....:eek:
