SSD Wear off in M1 MacBooks

To be fair, 2015 retinas did get a free screen replacement bc of peeling coatings and white spots appearing on their own. I had one, I know there was a model before that and after with panel issues. We can count the years of bad keyboards 2016-2019. 2019 intel 16” with very specific options seem...

    AMD's Radeon RX 7900-series Highlights

I saw crazy CoD framerate in hardware Unboxed uploads. That in of itself is something. Sad but if you cherry picked a few titles to optimize then you have a winner.

SSD Wear off in M1 MacBooks

You can install smartmontools if the health check doesn’t satisfy you. OS behavior will affect your drive more than different NAND. Historically the first and I think second gens of Air would famously be seen used with dead drives due to MacOS and 4gb ram base models. Hardware isn't that...

Planning to buy M1 MacBook Pro 16

Those work. I live in a city where 3 buses, a cable car, street car, subway is normal in the course of a day to avoid rideshare traffic. Messenger bags and backpacks are easier if you’re packed in with 1000s of people each leg of your short hop errands 7 days a week.

Anybody plan on grabbing one of the new RX7xxx Navi cards on launch?

If I still was into playing COD I’d seriously look at switching. 300fps at 1440p is a hell yes Otherwise no, unless Blackout comes back or the next Treyarc title isn’t a MW reskin I don’t need a gpus right now.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=incase+backpack&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_sop=15 I see these all over San Francisco as the default issued bag. They’re nice, I’ve had to set enough forgotten bags aside. I don’t use them bc I grew up here. Little else makes you instantly a good...

Planning to buy M1 MacBook Pro 16

I just can’t deal with only a laptop display all day. I’m on a 24” Ultrafine in clamshell most of the time using a Mac at home. I could grab one of the 5k Ultrafine from the office but the overhead on a limited Air is annoying if I’m using Adobe or ML tooling. My partner Dev uses a 14” M1 Pro...

    Is Windows 11 really bad?

That was also the era of the pc gaming mags and sites advising people to turn off Aero features. DRM was a topic back when people used disc drives to consume content and you bought boxed games. I recall HD drive was the MS thing. I can’t remember if I was running 2x2gb of ram back then or...

Scalpers are struggling to sell the RTX 4080 above MSRP, but retailers won't let them return the cards

Then you are in the right spot to hit the Q1 releases. Spending should tank right when CES 2023 kicks off. A lot of the 20 and 30 something gamers in my area are getting a free $350 from the State that’s sucking up used 3070 or 5800x3d.

I’ve been playing with more creative applications, that’s a normal step for post lockdown wfh. People don’t want to sit in meetings and have me narrate PowerPoint slide live. I respect audio engineers much more bc trying to dial in your own voice sucks. Adobe has been adding support for rtx...

    Worth upgrading from 9700K to 7700X ?

Frame pacing was something the 5800x3d had the advantage. You’re giving up that advantage playing at 3440x1440 and lowering quality settings at that canvas size won’t be as noticeable if you were playing at 1080p or 1440p I’d just wait it out until gpu power next year or the year after hits...

    Is Windows 11 really bad?

Overhead was the problem with vista, I didn’t see much of a reason back then to buy ram if I was just playing games. I believe that’s why 98 and win7 stuck around so long, you weren’t spending $ to get back performance you already had.

Scalpers are struggling to sell the RTX 4080 above MSRP, but retailers won't let them return the cards

Nvidia features are key. Rtx voice, nvenc, being able to play with the emerging GPT based code, it’s all something AMD needs to catch up for their pricing to make sense to me.

Scalpers are struggling to sell the RTX 4080 above MSRP, but retailers won't let them return the cards

I’m just saddened by the beanie baby behavior that’s persistent. A quick scan of my local Craigslist is still showing listings from people that have no idea wtf they bought, no update to the price, and in general a lack of awareness that 4000 series exists if the listing is for 3000/2000 gpu

Why bother installing OS? AI can just simulate it for you.

Yeah, we dealt with this using CodeWhisperer, copilot, various reskinned forks you see pop up everywhere. I feel bad for the kids that pay for o tour of whatever kind right now just to discover the output is crap. If it’s not crap, then the goals were such low hanging fruit they should have...

Why bother installing OS? AI can just simulate it for you.

New 7700X would not boost past 4.5Ghz

Manually set it to performance, but check once in a while after updates to make sure it didn’t get changed. That’s been an issue, and I don’t do locked core freq and voltage anymore as a response.

    Swap 5950X for 5800x3d?

If you’re focused on Flight sim and gaming, no productively requirement, then yes I’d do it. I would also be eyeing gpu releases bc you can always eat more resources in that genre.

Scalpers are struggling to sell the RTX 4080 above MSRP, but retailers won't let them return the cards

Central has always been a geek haven. Late 90s into the mid 2000s it wasn’t unusual to see rows of white box server builds with Central stickers from Howard St on them in the racks at 365 Main in the City. The adoption of Linux on x86 hardware was a fun time when F5 first started shipping load...

System won't power on at all after rebuild into new case

I would stop messing with it if the cpu is properly seated. I would move past this idea that the AM4 cpu pins must have more retention relative to a cpu cooler + paste pulling it. I have heated and rotated enough AM4 cpu coolers off the cpu with no damage to any component. That's enough...

System won't power on at all after rebuild into new case

That's what I got stuck on. Unless there is debris in/under the socket retaining lever, the pins are directional. I thought AM4 and the older versions the retaining arm had to be down for the pins to make proper contact.

Microsoft is turning Windows 11's Start Menu into an advertisement delivery system

^ makes me wonder why Windows never got a tool similar to modprobe. I know the desktop engineers use pre deployment scripts to ensure state on laptops. Usually it results in the opposite of this problem, where someone can’t use virtualization reliably.

Microsoft is turning Windows 11's Start Menu into an advertisement delivery system

Yeah, another factual example of why I took a turn down the Dev route for a bit. I was getting sick of the basic sys admin view of how to secure a system. If you ignore software, you aren’t securing anything. Obviously that ship has long sailed because I can think of instances like this one...

Microsoft is turning Windows 11's Start Menu into an advertisement delivery system

I am not talking about building out a workspace where you avoid fingerprinting wrappers. I was talking about embedding ads into the content most people consume as being the better method as it’s harder for users to dodge. Sure, fingerprinting a user off header data is clunkier when I can’t...

Microsoft is turning Windows 11's Start Menu into an advertisement delivery system

My main issue with ads would be interrupting my experience if I’m consuming content. We all have been thru that content consumption model change. Doesn’t matter what device or OS I’m using, the content itself is access tiered. So using a Linux distro won’t help, I have been meaning to try Min...

That works when you have use cases that can’t be delivered in time frame or the vendor straight up doesn’t have what you need as a deliverable sku. I agree. Even tho I focused on AWS after 2015, I still talked to guys I worked with still focused on datacenter compute. unlimited budget server/workstation, EPYC 9174F?

Integrating a NAS with a workstation/server essentially makes it DAS. So the benefits of a segmented and optimized route for internal devices as well as external access is kinda pointless here.
