Maybe we didn't get the full details at the time, or I missed something, which is completely possible. I do know from a small-med business perspective, this "either or" install is going to hurt business that aren't running compliant hardware for ESXi and have to buy a stack to run it. For...
It's sad the major players are doing this, hiding behind a paywall for home lab especially. VMware overhauling licensing and core requirements. Nutanix now hides behind a business email account for CE registration.
From the business side, VMware/Broadcom seem to be pushing out their smaller...
Could look at the Ubiquiti Edge routers X or 4. I have an Edgerouter X but haven't spent much time with it yet. Appears to have a simple GUI but I'm not familiar yet with how their dual lan failover stuff works. pfSense can do this also. Their netgate devices I hear are nice but pricey. Could...
I ran Verizon's for a few months. No real complaints, I tested pfsense with it as a backup/failover connection. It was comparable to Spectrums base package at the time, I was able to get ~300/10 on 5g. If I had to put a negative, it would be the obvious one of location. At the time I didn't...
I would go with the physical cores as well over hyperthreaded. Depending what licensing you have, could you use both systems in a vCenter? If yes, you could do EVC to level set architecture but get a little more room to play. Getting people to understand how "less = more" in the virtual space...
Thought I would throw my 2c on the usb/sdcard vs m.2. From vmware, they do not recommend running esxi on usb/sdcard do to limitations. I don't know if it was just old or this issue, but the sdcard I use in my home stuff failed. I did replace it with another because it's convenient and I have 2...

I haven't used the team group drives but have bought a few of the 240s in the past. 500gb pny for $28 isn't bad either. No issues with the smaller pny I bought in the past
Current is a VM on ESXI as well. 4core/8gb ram using L5638 in an HP DL380 g6. running a 2 node cluster to allow for vmotion.
upgraded from an old amd athlon x2 shuttle with 4gb ram.
Yes, sorry. You are correct. PCI passthrough using a GPU. No extra licensing required. Some of the reboot issue I was having seemed to be common for VM misconfigurations, and yes. Windows. I'm not sure how much I want to play with Linux. I dabble but and do some command stuff for work, but not...
I know this isn't a popular topic but came across this trying to pass a GPU through to my VM for plex. This is not to my credit, I wanted to share if anyone else was struggling with this too.
Issue:
-Enable GPU passthrough in esxi, power on/reboot of VM reboots esxi host
-vm fails to power on...
Fair enough. I thought the width was ok (misread the rackmount part wrong). I can relate to space savings though. My last case was a fractal 304. I'm still considering downsizing the new system into something similar.
Are looks a concern? What about something more custom with extruded...
Ohh. I might have to get me one too :) Reviews plus price is an easy win over the stock cooler i'm using now.
I just measured from the motherboard tray, it's about 177-178mm from tray to side panel. From one of the chips (not cpu) I measured about 165mm from the board to the case side. It...

What about a case that supports what you are looking to do? You can lay most cases on their side to have the horizontal layout you prefer. Something like this, you are pretty much only limited by your...
I know it's only two years late but I can give you some preliminary numbers.
I just loaded ESXI 6.5 back onto it. Booting was ~350-415 W, idle ESXI (no workloads) was ~257
Also, finally got some RAM for it. Populated it with 32 x4GB dimms
I found open/libre would still run into issues with formating when opening some MS docs. This is the price I would be OK paying to use it and is nice to have on hand. Thanks!!
If you know anybody. Only thing now is I'm pretty sure shipping is going to be stupid. I want to say it was 40-50$ when I got it from you. I checked Fedex to Washington state yesterday, if it'll fit into one of their flat rate boxes under 50lbs, it's 35$ but if it's retail, it's 150$!!
Going to bump this since it's the same rig.
Would anybody be interested in this setup? I still have it and it does work, it's just not getting any use anymore.
I did change it to 4x4gb sticks of ram as one of the og sticks failed I think. Also, I would have to see if I have a spare small...
I will second/third, whatever it's at, to de-lidding if you can. From what I understood at the time, the IHS was the issue, even repasting didn't do much due to gaps. I've been running de-lid with 4.2Ghz ?v. I'm not sure which one to reference, so here is a screenshot. I just let the Asrock...
Thanks!
That is good to know they don't work properly. dslreports says it cannot connect to all four test servers and that it's my fault :) I did try from 3 different browsers on 2 machines with the same result. Using my phone on mobile data, it did appear to work though. The rest of the...
I agree with you, they have a much newer CPU and it's dedicated to pfsense. I don't see an issue either. I was looking at systems with the same cpu.
All good. I'm just trying to give some data since it's mostly what you find on the internet/or guessing. I think I got it working, although the...
I agree about the linear speeds, at least on this setup. But it is worth noting the age and specs of my hardware vs what you are using. No baremetal. On some hold HP gear running esxi. Unfortunately, I don't have the same speeds as you to test with but my Spectrum is 400/20 and Verizon is...
Late to the party as usual, but you got me curious now about my setup. I was running active-backup with 2 carries since one was dsl. But I just got Verizon home internet which is comparable to spectrum. I run a pfsense virtualized on a xeon L5638. pfsense has 4 vcpu /8gb ram. Running a...

Any updates?
I ordered a pack of 10 resistors and still have 9 left. If you need one to try the fix and aren't in a rush, send me a pm and I can send you a couple.
Fixes like this are what make me miss radio shack
Geographical Adventures
It's a work in progress, technically free but I think has the potential to be fun, educational, and look pretty decent graphically. I won't claim to know coding, but, in the videos, he covers that as well when he's creating/updating it which could add more educational...

Could try this one. Its the general page search- https://www.costco.com/surge-protectors-ups.html?refine=||Brand_attr-CyberPower&searchProvider=lucidworks
C'mon! You can't be [H]ard if you don't live on the edge once in a while! There was no way I was buying a similar model to swap the drives into. I'm not sure what I was going to do if the resistor didn't work. Probably call it a loss and try the drives in a different storage device.
But, I...

Just completed the resistor "fix" and so far it's up and running! Even cleaned (more like chipped and scrapped) the cpu cement and put some new past on and added a 4gb ram stick i had laying around. I wish you the same luck !
I meant for the warranty piece of it and getting an "official" fix for it, not that it carries a ton of weight these days. But the fact they did offer something when they didn't have to, is worth noting.
-I bought mine used about 2years ago from my old boss. It was running great until I did a...
You got lucky? lol. that it was in the extended warranty period. If OP is looking at new gear, this issue shouldn't be a concern but if looking at used too, I would keep an eye out since they aren't under warranty anymore. I think they ended 2017 or 2018.
