Exactly. All my rigs have one, just for the DVD playback.
The Zip drive comment upstream reminded me: I had a Gateway computer with one in it and I'd never seen it before. I tried prying that zip disk out after it got sucked in. I finally, randomly, pressed the green light and "boink!" the...
Broadcast TV limited your stations and your content and had 4 commercial breaks an hour, totaling about 10-12 minutes back in the 1970's.
Cable came along. Pay a fee and never see an ad. Never.
Now? We're up to ~18 minutes of ads per hour (primetime), depending on some specifics. Some are...
I just bought a 6800. Non-XT. I was going to go 6700xt (yes, SEVEN). The price difference was about $20, so 6800 it was. This is a filler card for 1440 gaming.
I have not upgraded the 4 boxes in my signature to Win11, nor do I plan to unless forced.
I am not a business. I use my computers (notice I said "my"?) to surf the web, watch videos, play games, email, and create documents and spreadsheets. I have NO desire to let Microsoft grab a copy of...
I just bought a Quest 3. The passthrough lets me read my phone, but only if I hold it away. Up close and it is a blurry mess.
VR is very good.
MR is moderately good to good.
Pretty basic...but I just learned that "tethered" VR headsets are called "PCVR" vs. the "Standalone VR" headsets.
And...pancake lenses > Fresnel lenses.
I'm wondering how a VR headset gets output from my PC video card if it is a wireless connection or a usb-c wire? I'd think only a display port or hdmi connection would do that???
I'm going to use it for DCS flight sim gaming. So far, the Meta Quest 3 (soon to be released) seems to be in the...
The online game "accounts" are something I've always detested. If I buy a game (or a movie, or any other content), I feel that I OWN that content and should be able to store that content where and how I like so that I always have access to it.
A cd allows that. I prefer bluray movies over...
While these prices are pretty steep, I've never had any issue with any Seasonic power supply I've ever owned.
If I needed that much wattage, yeah, I'd fork over the money. To me, the PSU is the basic foundation of any build. Cases come and go, motherboards can be swapped, GPUs are temporary...
Referencing the 4070 chip supply...Moore's Law is Dead also had the same information: Nvidia will choke the supply so that the boards can sell at $600.
That opens a BIG door for AMD's ~$600 gpus (with recent price cuts). The 4070 is a flop at $600.
Well...crap. Twice as fast as a 3700x? (Looks down at his sig.) Sigh.
I think I feel the need to build a rig with one of these 7800x3d cpus. Off to check motherboard prices...
I used to subscribe. Then they had a staff change. (Well, that =always= happens...) And the new staff started pushing their San Francisco values in the various tech articles.
I stopped subscribing.
Nvidia has lost me, forever, as a customer due to Jensen's attempt to manipulate media and other heavy-handed autocratic impulses. I still have a choice, so I choose NOT-nvidia.
AMD? Yeah, check my sig. Some GPUs are beyond their life expectancy. I'll keep waiting. The prices will drop...
I am disappointed with this launch.
AMD did not live up to their own pre-launch statements. Perhaps Nvidia is not as evil as I thought?
The price is not the issue (well, sort of. ;) ): it's that AMD missed the benchmarks that they, themselves, touted that these cards could achieve. It was not...
I agree...and that's why you see what you do in my sig. ;)
But, on-topic, I'm leaning, hard, to the 7900 XTX based on the small price difference between that and 7900 XT.
Edited to add: Of course, I'll be waiting for reviews, first.
All newer generation cards fare quite well. Use "Hi" for 3 minutes. EXCEPTION: the RTX4090, due to its well-known high power consumption, needs "Defrost" for 30 minutes. (Or, just set the microwave to frozen ground beef, 10 lbs.)
(Unless your microwave does not use 120v/60Hz. If you're on...
Not on launch. I learned my lesson years (decades?) ago.
I'll wait for the reviews.
But, yeah, I'm in. Especially after seeing the highlights on AdoredTV, GN, JZ2c, HU, etc.
Just ordered a 5800x3d to put into my 5800x rig. That'll go to the 3700x. That, in turn, will replace a 2700x
Gotta love the AMD compatibility.
As for any faster speeds...well, I was curious, so now I'll find out.
(As for the next gen...I may skip that, and wait for the gen beyond that. If I...
I have nowhere near the rich (pun intended) history some folks have with video cards. Yeah, the 3dfx Voodoo2 I bought for ~$350 was the big one. (That, plus two of something else in SLI. Cutting edge video...20+ years ago. ;) )
I've tried to keep my rigs, if not cutting edge, at least...
I've got an older rig, 4790k that my son is running. Currently a GTX670 (the =4= Gig version! :) ) is handling GPU duties.
Looking at the prices of the RX6600's, I think I'll grab one for him.
He's gaming (Fortnite, etc.) on a 1080 screen.
I think he'll definitely see an improvement!
Keep...
Great thread. I just got a video card back from MSI's repair center. They didn't list what they did, just "repaired". WTF?
I'd like to stress-test the card and find out if it really is fixed (and if it isn't, to isolate the failure mode), so this thread is very timely.
Thanks
Yeah...gonna do the 5800x3d. It'll replace the 5800x...which will replace a 3700x...which will replace a 2700x. The AMD waterfall... ;)
Meantime, I may get a placeholder 6600xt and see what this fall/winter brings for GPUs. If there's something exciting (and available and not overpriced)...
Well, I'm on the AMD-wagon at this point in my PC build journey. See my sig. I =love= being able to drop an upgraded cpu into my "fleet lead" and then let that cause cascading upgrades to the rest. So, I'd be on board with the idea of keeping your mobo and just adding in a new AMD cpu.
Right...
I had an Intel cpu fail. It had an intermittent bad math processor. I was extremely lucky how it was caught. But, a phone call to Intel, literally 2 minutes talking with a tech establishing my bona fides and describing the test failure, and they cross-shipped me a new processor. Had it within a...
Yesterday, something occurred that will ensure that RDNA3 will be a revolutionary leap ahead in performance: I ordered an RX6700XT.
Yep...since I finally committed to a new card, it guarantees that the NEXT card will be the one I should've waited for. Sigh....
Glad to hear that the 5800x3d seems to be another AMD hit.
See my sig: I have a forlorn 2700x that is just begging to be replaced. Obviously, using the Trickle Down Upgrade Path (TDUP), I'll drop a new 5800x3d into my 5800x rig, use THAT in one of the 3700x, and then the 3700x replaces the...
Well, Fire Crotch, after being roasted by this hot reception, have you warmed up to this crowd yet?
(I'll be here all week. Try the veal and tip the waitresses.)
