Just purchased this screen and I wanted to give a shout out to those who are working from home and still using 1080p. This seems to be a solid monitor so far:
- 2560 x 1440
- 27 inches
- IPS
- Great sound system for built-in speakers
- 100hz
- VRR if you're into that kind of thing
- 100% sRGB...
I get what you're saying and I respect that. I do, however, feel that the first GPU to include T&L sets it apart from its forefathers. Before this inclusion, the CPU was still doing some of the heavy lifting. Not all of it obviously, and that's where the old graphics accelerators saved the...
Is this why my plasma refreshes at 96hz for 24hz content? It does look lovely. Do OLED TV's not do the same thing? EDIT - I don't mean 96hz specifically but just display 24hz content at a multiple - like 120hz (like most of them are capable of doing)?
I'm a BFI whore. Unless I see a FALD LCD that allows the same tweaking as my Viewsonic XG-2431, I'm not interested. OLED is the only tech that doesn't require extensive tweaking to get a perfect crosstalk-less strobe. Even if it's at reduced clarity compared to said XG-2431.
So yes, I get...
I always find these kinds of products fascinating. They took some odd design choices and risks. With 20/20 hindsight it's easy to see that it never would have worked out but it's still fun to look back on them anyways. Parhelia's weird Vertex Shaders vs Pixel Shaders being one of those...
Dude, CRT and Plasma pimp-slap LCD, in my opinion. Yet I'm using LCD now. I use what I have for the job that I need. I do wish to get an OLED monitor though. But yes, I will continue to "go back" to LCD. Will I use LCD on my main gaming rig afterward? Probably not - why would I?
I wish all manufacturers put at least some effort into calibrating their screens like Apple did. A good bit of them finally are, but I always appreciated Apple for this. Anyways - I have no dog in this fight. Just saw your mention of a calibrated screen and wanted to chime in with how much I...
Only a matter of time. I was driving home and explaining to my kids what analog TV was like "back in the day". There's lots of old stuff that children today have virtually no exposure to anymore. Sad.
It's the first GPU with hardware T&L, which was the game-changing aspect of it. I think that you can make an argument for the claim of "first gaming GPU" using this standard. Before this the main CPU still had to do the T&L calculations. GeForce 256 eliminated that.
I mean honestly, the best strategy is to get the best monitor tech you can given the time you have it, if it's available to you. LG CX owners and C1 owners can testify as 120hz BFI is no longer a thing for TV's and only recently just sprouted with the new ASUS monitor.
In my opinion, emissive displays will always beat backlit displays. No, OLED doesn't get as bright as FALD, but they don't have to cheat to get their blacks either. I think the only real contender to OLED is the two-layer LCD panels, where one polarizer layer controls black and white emission...
Glad it's not just me. I had to switch back and forth between classic and remastered on a couple of occasions just to be able to see myself. Good deal. Looking forward to the update.
Thanks for this! Will watch the video - looking forward to it. My understanding is that the early release bugs and all that stuff applies to the European version of Tomb Raider on Saturn. They went back and fixed the bugs up in the North American and Japanese release. I do recall seeing a...
Finished the first Tomb Raider the other night. My kids have been enjoying watching me play it. I warned them though that the ending was very anti-climactic. :D
That said this brings me to my biggest gripe about the collection thus far - no level select! And no "Restart Level" option...
Yep. Been playing it for a couple of weeks now. Exactly what I wanted from it. Fair enough, I like narrative-driven games too but if the gameplay loop isn’t satisfying I could care less.
It just hit me. If they remastered those 90s Playstation games and nail them, in terms of preserving the original gameplay, I would be all over that. Those games were so much fun. Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Tomb Raider, Tony Hawk, etc. I know some franchises were remastered but still...
Yes. Plasma tech had a lot of progression in its lifetime. No doubt. I had an older Sony 50 inch from 2005 and the quality difference between it and my low-to-mid Samsung was night and day. And that’s not just pixel resolution.
While not a AAA game, apparently the Tomb Raider remastered used AI on the textures to upscale them. I think it did a pretty good job and was obviously curated by the developers. So hat's off to them. Nothing wrong with using AI so long as it's done tastefully. Now AI generating an actual...
It wouldn't surprise me if a 240hz OLED's 4ms of persistence blur did turn out to be better than plasma. My plasma screen's motion quality at 60hz with the Test UFO at default speeds resemble a 120hz sample and hold motion clarity but with a tad more motion clarity. So not 4ms but better than...
It's close enough for me. 4ms OLED BFI looked promising but it seems that manufacturers have largely abandoned it. Yes, there's the 120hz BFI monitor that ASUS is pushing out but that's the exception not the rule, and it's locked to 120hz only.
Still, plasma is a far cry from 60hz sample and...
Oh boy you're taking me down a nostalgic path. My favorite PC game is still probably Laura Bow: The Colonel's Bequest. I have yet to "Super Sleuth" it. :) Still have my MT-32 that I whip out every now and then to just fire these old classics up.
Plasma is still the shit. There's a TV repair place locally that sells them at a decent price. They fix them up. I will probably contact them to upgrade to a 65 inch model. We moved into a new house since getting our 51-inch Samsung and it's a little small in the room that it's occupying...
I mean yeah, that's where it's all going. Technology that could be made to better the lives of all will eventually be used by those who would, to enslave.
