Intel Arc Alchemist Xe-HPG Graphics Card with 512 EUs Outperforms NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti (Leak)

I don't know if Intel is going to be making cards or just chips, but if they are making cards, they should run a promotion allowing you to buy one of these direct at MSRP if you also buy their top CPU.

    12700k AIO cooling

Quick test with my EVGA CLC-280 and 5960X at various pump speeds. Each load level was allowed to run for 10 minutes in order to reach steady state, and I gave the system 2 minutes to stabilize after each pump speed change. Temps reported are package temp averaged over 1 minute. Ambient temp...

New 5900X rig suddenly running sluggish (need help identifying & solving)

I had an issue that turned out to be Realtek audio drivers before. The symptoms were constant CPU usage of 7% at idle - which was 1 thread at 100% on a 16-thread processor, the machine took a very long time to shut down, and I heard some occasional static through my speakers. No BSOD or...

New 5900X rig suddenly running sluggish (need help identifying & solving)

I'm thinking Windows update downloaded some unsavory Realtek audio drivers. I would run DPC latency checker and see what kind of numbers you get.

    Core i7-5960X 5930K 5820K Overclocking & Performance @ [H]

Nice chip. I'll never forget this one 5820K I had. I don't know the batch number, but it was Costa Rican, so probably not a J. It could do 4.7 at 1.25 on freaking AIR. The motherboard I was using died after a year and took the chip with it unfortunately. I've bought and sold a lot of...

That's for Turbo Boost Max 3.0, which came out with Broadwell-E so your CPU doesn't support it. I would check Windows Update, Services, and Task scheduler in that order for why it keeps reinstalling.

It is, and if he backed off to 5GHz, those temps would get a lot lower without really losing anything.

    Alder Lake launching November 4th

^^ Interesting. This would create some additional options if it can work on a more budget-priced board. It would be competing with the current budget option, which is to get a 12600K/12700K and a $200 DDR4 board. The money that would have went towards getting a K-series CPU could go towards...

Arctic MX-5 vs Indium Foil DIY thermal pad

I used to use upside-down air cans like LN2, and bottle caps like LN2 pots. What else do you do when you're 16 and working in a computer repair shop on a slow day?

Arctic MX-5 vs Indium Foil DIY thermal pad

I don't think I ever removed it. I just reused it over and over again. 20 watt CPUs were very forgiving.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. Good to know. I've been on X99 since release, so I've had a lot of time to experiment with different chips and settings, but always on the same board.

    Core i7-5960X 5930K 5820K Overclocking & Performance @ [H]

I should have mentioned that the ideal input voltage is going to depend on how aggressive the OC is (and what LLC is chosen). He was trying for 4GHz, so it really doesn't matter much at that level, but lower is actually better for stability, something like 1.85 would be good for 4.0. I have 3...

    Core i7-5960X 5930K 5820K Overclocking & Performance @ [H]

Input voltage should be 1.8-1.9. CPU I/O should stay at 1.05 unless you're trying to OC the RAM. 4GHz prime 95 stable will need vcore between 1.1-1.2 on most of these chips. I think you need to set "vcore voltage mode" to override on that board to set a manual voltage.

Arctic MX-5 vs Indium Foil DIY thermal pad

Back in those days, I was the only person I knew who actually used thermal paste. Most coolers came with some kind of shitty thermal pad already stuck on, and everyone I knew just used that. I would buy the Radioshack stuff and gob it on.

Arctic MX-5 vs Indium Foil DIY thermal pad

It probably varies from generation to generation. I had to think for a bit, but I remembered where I first read about lapping a CPU in situ. Apparently someone e-mailed Noctua a few years ago about the subject, and the rep replied, "lapping the CPU/ IHS outside the socket doesn't help, as it...

It is, but the retention mechanism does deform the IHS. There is an active thread about this being an issue with LGA 1700.

Arctic MX-5 vs Indium Foil DIY thermal pad

Thinner would be better if the surfaces mated extremely well. One thing that would help would be to lap the CPU while it's actually mounted in a socket. I guess you would have to a buy a broken motherboard with the same socket (ideally the same board), cut out the section around the CPU, and...

Arctic MX-5 vs Indium Foil DIY thermal pad

You're welcome. It's been a fun side project for me, even though it came to a rather anticlimactic end. Now I'm going in a different direction, and I've been researching the compositions of various thermal pastes. Most commercial pastes have a readily-accessible MSDS that often reveals the...

6 MONTH FOLLOW-UP It looks like my initial concerns about mounting pressure are confirmed. As I mentioned, I was able to remove my CPU and cooler several times with no issues, but I never removed the indium foil from the CPU. Well, curiosity finally got the better of me, and I finally peeled...

AMD A Series APU Poor Performance

I'm not sure why this thing is so bad. I have a Win7 laptop with an A10-7300 "Kaveri," which I believe is even slower than this chip. In benchmarks, it trades blows with a 2.3GHz Sandy Bridge i3-2350M, and it gets its ass kicked halfway down the street by a 3.3GHz i7-2640M. Even so, it has no...

Does a 12700K and Alder Lake CPUs run much hotter with DDR5 RAM than DDR4

No. There wouldn't be enough of a difference in heat from the RAM to make such a difference. 1 degree maybe, at most. What's happening is that the faster RAM is allowing your CPU to crunch OCCT Large without stalling (as much). Try a test that is less memory intensive than OCCT large and see...

Do you want 64GB of DDR5? Be prepared to spend two times more than DDR4 to go slower!

So you had to drop from 6000 to 4400 in order to go from 2 sticks to 4? Wow. I think that's more of a hit than anyone would have anticipated. Good to know. I wonder if there are voltages that can be tweaked to get higher than 4400 with 4 sticks or if you really just hit a wall?

3600C15 1.35V is a really, really good bin. You can do a lot with that memory. I would start with dropping tRFC to 300. It can probably go down as low as 280, but 300 to be safe.

When will Video Card prices come down lower?

I'm hoping for a dip in prices after Christmas. If the 3070 (or 6700XT) drops to $800, I'll grab one before the price goes back up. Otherwise, I'll wait for Intel. I'd rather give them my money anyway.

Yeah, it's worth it just for the good feelz. The old one will definitely see some use eventually. Whenever I finally upgrade, one of my kids can have this board, chip, graphics cards, and the psu to go with it.

I replaced a perfectly good 6-year-old power supply. These were the results.

I figured I'd share this because it seems like no one ever tests PSUs for overclocking. It's just kind of "You need clean power." "How much of a difference does it make?" "idk, you just need it bruh." I've been running an EVGA 1000GQ for the last 6 years in the system in my sig. It's not...
