And ordered the 16" instead !!!

I didn't realize th 16" was only $200 more. I had to correct this mistake !!!

A warning though: After the increase in Taxes and AppleCare (There is a $121 price increase to $399 for the 16" for some reason. 2" of screen can't cause all of that) the actual total increases by $500 to $3900.

waste of money
As somebody who likes to record externally in ProRes on my Atomos... These new MacBook Pros are going to be a significant upgrade with the built-in ProRes decoder/encoder accelerators on the SoC. Having a 1000nit-sustained display is going to be great for HLG workflows too. These are going to be such a huge win for creatives.

Outside of gaming and Windows-only apps, I don't think there's any laptop that offers the combination of features/performance/efficiency that these new MacBook Pro can provide.

Can't you just upgrade the GPU for that, or are they unable to be upgraded?

Unable to be upgraded after specc'ing during purchase.

1) It's Apple, they've been cutting off tinkerers for years
2) It's an SoC, rather than discrete CPU/GPU, so it's all a single, soldered, and un-socketed package on the logic board

If I used a laptop as my main computer, I'd have gone with the MBP 16, too. I just wanted a good road warrior machine, so the base model MBP 14 M1 Pro was the right choice. I probably could have gotten by just fine with the M1 Air, but to get 16GB I had to add $200 thus raising the price to $1449. For the extra $450 I'll get the XDR 120hz display, MagSafe, all the new ports, and the more powerful/future-proof M1 Pro.

I considered waiting for the 2022 M2 Air, but I really don't like the color choices and white keyboard. The colors look like they were chosen by a kindergarten finger painting class. I had white key caps on my desktop PC's mech keyboard. They looked cool, but required constant cleaning. Same for the keys on my 2020 Dell XPS 13 Arctic White.

Not even, when other comparable laptops cost similar as well. Once the performance tests of this come out, you will see how nothing can touch it. That M1 chip is a beast.

Why do you continue to post negative in posts like this on it? Because you can't afford it or something?

I thought it was possible to get the prores hardware encoder without buying a whole new MacBook, however I was mistaken. I learned something today, thank you

He's not happy in life so he wants everyone else to be miserable with him.

I ended up cancelling mine. I still need to replace my old Mac, and pretty sure I'm going to be getting one, but I'm waiting to see if 64 GB will make a difference according to reviews. Thinking 16" 64 GB RAM with 4 TB HDD from what I cancelled (32 GB with 2 TB HDD). I figure, if it's going to last 5+ years, probably best not to skimp out.

The main issue is the price. I figured to try applying for Apple Pay for the zero interest 12 month, but despite having great credit with zero debt, I came $100 short. I can pay it off immediately, but $500/month feels nicer compared to paying off $6000 in one shot, especially with Christmas purchases, and a full upgrade to my desktop PC all coming within the next month as well.

I was under the impression that you didn't need to buy an entire new MacBook to upgrade the GPU. However I was mistaken.
This comment literally doesn't make any sense. For 99.99% of laptops, you need to buy an entirely new laptop to upgrade the GPU. Most laptops don't have upgradeable GPUs.

What doesn't make sense about my comment? Just because you don't understand it does not mean that it didn't make sense.

You said it's a waste of money because you have to buy a new laptop to upgrade the GPU, but that's true of 99.99% of laptops. So ... your comment makes no sense.

I was mistaken. What doesn't make sense about that? Almost everyone makes mistakes. Mistakes make sense. They are a natural event in this world. I'm surprised you didn't know that. It looks like we both learned something from this thread, nice. :)

Maybe expound on your thought processes when you say something like "waste of money" with zero context. People can't read your mind. It just comes off as jerkish.

outside of the screen size and ports, i cant find any reason to upgrade from my m1 13" mbp m1

nothing really takes advantage of all that new core count and gpu count other than creative type apps i don't use , be nice to see more development for the m1 line. such powerful chips with so little to use them for , be nice to see more AAA titles develop for them

I honestly wouldn't look at upgrading from an M1 Mac unless you depend on raw performance for work. This is more for people upgrading from an earlier MBP, not to mention anyone upgrading a laptop they use for heavy-duty audiovisual editing and performing.

Yeah that is kind of where I am at, i like the idea of more speed but really the majority of my m1 mac use is web interfaces and remote desktop for clients lol, larger screen is the only real draw

I have my Alienware x17 for gaming and horsepower if needed

The performance is night and day from the M1 Mac Mini to this one. I am shocked at the difference with my M1 Max 16" has shown from it.

I played around with a 16 and a 14 in store. Really nice machines but I can't justify it for my use cases. Would love a 16 inch MacBook Air but for now, I will stick with the ThinkBook I recently purchased.

There will literally never be a 16" air, although that would be amazing.

The M1 Air is the darling of Executives all over. I hope Apple doesn't frack that up..

Or you just might want the fastest Mac available.

God help me (and my wallet) I have been that way with Mac's for 37 years (n)

How's the screen on yours? I know it's not XDR miniLED, but if it's on par with recent MBPs, I might snag a refurb M1 if I can find one with 16GB/512GB.

Ithink its awesome.

The M1 Air, overall, is the best carry around computer one can buy, period, IMHO,

Just put a thin shell on kit to get some grip on it.

This is the one I use:

The keyboard protector is shit. It blocks all backlight !!!

Opening slowly while enjoying a bottle of Martini & Rossi Asti Spumanti. The morning wine :)

It is a heavy lil' dude....

Enjoy your new laptop. I've been wanting one, but realized that every single Apple laptop I've has had a defect and broken in some way.

Powerbook G4 - ATI GPU died
Macbook Pro 2006 - Nvidia GPU died - Apple care fixed it.
Macbook Pro 2011 - ATI GPU died, headphone jack stopped working, SD card reader never worked right. Apple refused to fix it even though I had Apple care.
Macbook Pro 2015 - Bought it new in 2018 because it didn't have a discrete GPU to die. It crashed a month ago and I couldn't get it to boot for 15 minutes. Eventually it decided to work again. Scanned the drive and found no errors. I expect it to die one day soon.

I love the screens and trackpads on the Macs, but never again will I buy another. I definitely have remorse.

I finally received mine - that was one long wait.

16" 64GB 4TB - all of the bells and whistles except the 8TB.

I absolutely LOVE it! This thing is burning through 4k/120 and 8k/30 footage in ways I only wish my TR3 3960X system could. So far I'm particularly delighted by the various quality-of-life improvements. This might be the best webcam I've had on a mobile device - great for meetings. 1990s Thinkpad's aside, it's definitely the best keyboard I've enjoyed in a mobile device. Probably the best screen. Hands down the best sound, without question. Premiere operates at a completely different level. Right now my only regret is there not being an M1-optimized Direct3D because I really want to play some games with this thing :)

It'll be fun getting to know this beast over Thanksgiving weekend...

I have owned Mac's since 1984 and have never had one die.

Bad HD? sure. CMOS battery? of course. Floppy? Please.

But no deaths.

Enjoy the new laptop!! I haven't had an apple laptop since shortly after Windows 10. I need more GPU/CPU power and the ability to take it apart if I need/want. That being said all of my apple devices have been good to me and the customer service is top notch

I can appreciate the tinkering concerns, but... Apple is generally stomping comparable AMD and Intel chips in CPU power, and its GPU performance is comparable to an RTX 30 series (including the 3080 at times). If you edit any audio, photos or videos, a MacBook Pro might just be the fastest portable option available.

The new M1 designs look pretty impressive on paper. I doubt it is really comparable to a 3080 though.

The answer is "yes and no." If there's a native app that makes good use of the GPU, you will see the M1 Max compete well against an RTX 3080. The problem, of course, is that some apps still aren't native (particularly games), and others just don't do much with the GPU.
